The Great Mask Conspiracies That Divide the US

Hits: 23

Do we wear a face mask or not wear a face mask? YIKES! That is the most confusing question of the year. We can not safely make decisions based on conspiracy theories, heated emotional nor underinformed opinions. We must base our actions on scientific facts that have proven outcomes.

We the people in the United States of America are divided over the simple act of wearing face-masks in the interest of Public Health safety to slow the spread of COVID-19. We have the Mask-Wearers versus the Mask-Resistance.

In my humble opinion, this Mask War between family, friends, foes, and neighbors is unconscionable, tho’ not a new phenomenon. ( 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic. ) At the core of the current argument in 2020 is the overload of misinformation spread this novel coronavirus on social media along with holding to religious, political, and personal ideals which I believe are cognitive distortions. ( See below.)

Your mask may protect them. Their mask may protect you. says the CDC https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html

I often play Devils’ advocate when I try to assess exactly what the opposing side in the debate. I learn so much that way. There have been times when I was assigned the task of debating on the side that I did not agree with. Then there are times when I have changed my mind when I learned more facts. In order to defeat the opposition, you have to study their points.I believe that violent confrontations over not wanting to wear a mask in the grocery store could be avoided by the customer if they properly prepared themselves emotionally. Instead, it looks to me that the defiant have premeditated to bully their way inside to deliberately make a negative impact.

Why not write down the pros and cons of wearing a simple clothe mask to the store- get in-get out? this post has more than enough content to help those with a mask aversion to finding the pros and cons of mask-wearing to pick and choose from. I can’t make YOU do anything you don’t want to do. But consider how much more freedom you have to go out with a mask on for a short time as popped to have to Lock-Down again? Are you holding back the flattening of the curve in your town or state? Is it worth you being stuck in your mindset? I am not a psychologist, but I can give you some interesting articles to read online.

I will provide links to credible articles that have been published by sources who include medical and scientific professionals’ who provide proper documentation of studies versus non-medical professional opinions. I will also share links to what I think are outrageous temper tantrums in public and ways that incidents could have been handled much better by the mask-resister.

I want to be clear that I do know that there are some people who are having an emotionally difficult time putting something over their nose and mouth. In psychobabble the term is Mask-Aversion. (See below)  I do have empathy for them. With that said, I believe this anxious aversion to a face -mask is real and they may be able to get some help with cognitive dissonance – so consult your doctor rather than fighting with other people on social media.

  • My stance is that mask-wearing appropriately is one of a number of steps to take when there is an outbreak of highly infectious respiratory illness. A mask is a standard medical and scientific precautionary measure in addition to limiting contacts, social distancing, good hand washing, and disinfecting with recommended cleaning agents.
  • Those who are resistant to mask-wearing claim: “mask-wearers are sheep or sheeple.”; “the first step of government control to see who is compliant: “a mask is the ‘mark of the beast”; “mask-wearers are idiots who live in fear”: “masks don’t work and they cause high CO2 levels and bacterial pneumonia.” “FYI – Masks Increase Co2 Levels – You Become Dumber and More Compliant to Authority.”
  • IMO a great number of anti-maskers are reacting much this those who have been indoctrinated by cult leaders. ( Not all mask-resisters.)
What is cognitive dissonance and how does it work?
Cognitive dissonance refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. This produces a feeling of mental discomfort leading to an alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the discomfort and restore balance.

I have read and listened to the other side of the coin who does have nuggets of truth in their claims. There is an old question that asks this: “if the devil says to you 99 truths with one lie, is he telling the truth or telling a lie?”

Is the omission of important facts telling the whole truth and thing but the truth or are you telling a lie? I have watched videos recommended for me by anti-maskers who were more than happy to share a link to support their claim ( I asked for it.) the problem I had with the Stop the Tape was that I had watched the LIVE version and several times later. What the person who put together his so-called evidence. had played an out of context tape of Dr. Fauci saying that we should not wear masks (stop the tape). The part where Dr. Fauci completed his recommendations saying in March 2020 “for now.” yes, the good doctor has updated his recommendations to “please wear masks to slow the spread so we do not overwhelm the medical system”, which has now happened in July.

Yes, the numbers are woefully skewed, misleading, and inaccurate. Both Pro and Con Mask-wearing proponents agree on that point. But, the emotional context and conclusions beg to differ.

President Trump claimed to have a solution to that problem. Check out the complete post with the partial quote below. This transition is still a mess it seems and here is why…

THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS COVID-19 Hospital Data System That Bypasses CDC Plagued By Delays, Inaccuracies

The delays and problems with data on the availability of beds, ventilators and safety equipment could have profound consequences as infections and deaths soar throughout most of the country, public health experts say.

“If the information is not accurate, it could cost time — and lives,” says Lisa M. Lee, formerly the chief science officer for public health surveillance at CDC, now at Virginia Tech. For instance, knowing which hospitals have the capacity to take on new patients is critical, she explains. “If all the ICU beds are taken up, emergency medical personnel need to take [new patients] to the next town over or to the next county.”

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/07/31/897429054/covid-19-hospital-data-system-that-bypasses-cdc-plagued-by-delays-inaccuracies

That is an all-or-none conundrum, don’t you think? And therein lies the controversy.

What is Conspiracy Theory?

“Immune to Evidence”: Experts Explain ho Dangerous Coronavirus Conspriacies Spread

A conspiracy theory… discussed at length on the internet by people who are not bona fide journalists or government officials or whistleblowers in an organization or investigative committees of regulators. … independent sources, individuals who self-nominate and put themselves forward as being in possession of the truth.

In principle, that could be true…. look at the way these people think and talk and communicate… their cognition is different from … conventional cognition.

Stephan Lewandowsky studies the way people think… why they engage in conspiracy theories…. cognitive scientist from England’s University of Bristol observes wild speculation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, he sees how it fits into the historical pattern of misinformation and fake news.

Once something has withstood scrutiny, you accept it. Otherwise you’re in a state of complete nihilism and you can’t believe anything.

Medical conspiracy theories and COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has spawned almost innumerable conspiracy theories, and conspiracists like the antivaccine movement have joined forces with COVID-19 conspiracy theorists. To combat the proliferation of pseudoscience rooted in conspiracy theories, it is useful to step back and examine the nature of conspiracy theories, including ones that are not medical, even ones like QAnon. Critical thinking is the key to inoculating the susceptible against conspiratorial thinking.

The Conspiracy Theory Handbook: Downloads and translations

Posted on 7 May 2020 by BaerbelW

Conspiracy theories attempt to explain events as the secretive plots of powerful people. While conspiracy theories are not typically supported by evidence, this doesn’t stop them from blossoming. Conspiracy theories damage society in a number of ways. To help minimise these harmful effects, The Conspiracy Theory Handbook, by Stephan Lewandowsky and John Cook, explains why conspiracy theories are so popular, how to identify the traits of conspiratorial thinking, and what are effective response strategies.

… research findings and expert advice on dealing with conspiracy theories.

…abbreviation CONSPIR … mnemonic to more easily… seven traits of conspiratorial thinking:

  • Contradictory
  • Overriding suspicion
  • Nefarious intent
  • Something must be wrong
  • Persecuted Victim
  • Immune to Evidence
  • Re-interpreting Randomness

This is not to say, that there are not power-hungry mentally-off their rocker individuals who scheme and plot. Of course, there are narcissistic leaders and just plain evil people without personality disorders who will trample on bodies to climb to the top. Consider how mentally unhealthy it is to live in fear of a devil or Commies hiding behind every tree. Maybe there is. But, “knowing a secret no one else believes” is not a healthy way to cope.

COVID: Top 10 current conspiracy theories

BY MARK LYNAS

APRIL 20, 2020

As the COVID-19 crisis worsens, the world also faces a global misinformation pandemic. Conspiracy theories that behave like viruses themselves are spreading just as rapidly online as SARS-CoV-2 does offline. Here are the top 10 conspiracy theories making the rounds.

The article link below was posted on June 6, 2020, when studies on the mask’s effectiveness were still ‘shoddy” in my mind is worth the read as it may give some support to the “I refuse to wear a stupid maks because they don’t work, ” team.

I have to admit that I really don’t understand the somewhat opinionated Fact Check conclusion which is now outdated on August 1, 2020.

BREAKING NEWS

I live in Iowa in a small city. Iowa City, where I ‘rub elbows so to speak with some of the most brilliant medical minds in the country. ( I admit that I am prejudice. about Iowa home-grown men and women.) I also respect our Iowa Governor Reynolds who like me Is a proud 5th generation Iowan. Governor Reynolds as appealed to us Iowan to do the right thing. She has reused to make an official wear a maks order. The reason being is that no one will enforce the order, which would tie up law enforcement from more serious duties. In addition, she reminds Iowans that wearing a maks is only part of the process to slow the spread: physical distancing, avoid crowds, and good handwashing:

I agree with Governor Reynolds. However, some cites have had human beings making poor choices that have caused the chain reaction of increased COVID-19 cases. The mayor of Iowa has ordered mask-wearing in public in an effort to care for our neighbors in our community. The majority of us comply to the T. Of course, we would since many residents in my fair city are associated with the University of Iowa hospitals and clinics.

The quote below is a great example of how you make changes at the local and state level, non-violently.

10 directors of Iowa’s county health departments call on Reynolds to mandate face coverings

Zachary Oren Smith

Iowa City Press-Citizen

…directors of the Linn and Johnson County Public Health departments … with the heads of eight other county health departments… calling on Gov. Kim Reynolds to mandate the use of cloth face coverings in Iowa to help reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The letter came days after the Iowa Medical Society and 14 other health-professional groups made a similar plea…

…letter cites two studies that support the efficacy of widespread use of face-coverings. The first came from the 75,000 employee-Boston hospital system:

…examined two Missouri hair stylists, leading the CDC to conclude that, “as stay-at-home orders are lifted, professional and social interactions in the community will present more opportunities for spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Coronavirus Fact-Check #6: Does wearing a mask do anything?

Governments around the world are enforcing facial coverings to prevent SARS-Cov-2 infection, but does the science support their use?

The only evidence-based review I was able to find is forced to use very soft language in its conclusions. Titled [my emphasis] “Cloth Masks May Prevent Transmission of COVID-19″, it openly admits [again, my emphasis]:

Although no direct evidence indicates that cloth masks are effective in reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the evidence that they reduce contamination of air and surfaces is convincing

Keep Your Germs to Yourself

“It’s really a perfectly good public health intervention that’s not used,”….

“It’s not to protect yourself. It’s to protect people against the droplets coming out of your respiratory tract.”

… practice social distancing … stay at home as much as possible to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. … likely to spew some saliva… when people speak and breathe and sing—you don’t have to sneeze or cough—these droplets are coming out,”

…health care workers receive training on how to wear them and … take other important safety measures such as thorough hand-washing. “I think the average person, if they were taught how to wear a mask properly … would have some protection against infection in the community.”

…A key factor pushing health authorities to discourage mask wearing is the limited supply…

…The shortage … do-it-yourself movements … to produce cloth masks—which CDC acknowledges can be a last resort for health care workers lacking other protection.

Rigorous studies comparing cloth masks to surgical ones or investigating the ideal material for homemade masks are lacking.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/would-everyone-wearing-face-masks-help-us-slow-pandemic

In the early weeks, I myself did state that untrained people will not know how to wear masks properly. I was correct. Many people are “doing it wrong“. We all must do better. However, for anyone to make the effort to wear a mask tho they may “do it wrong” should be commended for that effort. I have read where some anti-maskers state that people “do it wrong” so they may as well not wear a maks as “masks don’t help.” We have points that are on the same page of our debate.. But, people can be taught.

In my opinion, ‘wearing a facemask for others’ is making the effort to show you care about others in your community because the viral load will be reduced.

Wear a mask when you can not social distance, still requires good hand washing.

Asymptomatic and Pre-symptomatic

Who do you think is spreading SARS COV-2? I would think we would know better than to sit next to someone on the bus or in the church who is hacking and smells feverish, right?

It is the unmasked choir singer(s) who is feeling fine that may be super-spreader to the rest of the choir. Or it could be the unmasked inebriated Good-Time-Joe who is hugging every one is the bar confessing, “I love you, man.”

( Only a few examples where masks are not being worn and there is no social distancing. and of course, I will get some source of people who literally “blew it” coming up.)

What is the medical definition of the word asymptomatic?
Definition of Asymptomatic. The term asymptomatic means literally the absence of symptoms. It describes a condition that is present, but in which a person does not show any outward signs or symptoms of the disease.
www.verywellhealth.com/asymptomatic-definition-import…

When is a pre-symptomatic carrier or COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 most contagious?

What is the point of temperature check and slapping on hand-sanitizer when someone who feeling well with no symptoms of illness at that time is spewing out the novel coronavirus for you to inhale or catch in the mucus membranes of your eyes?

Please do look at the dates of the quotes below. I did include some links to posts written earlier than July 2020 because they had some relevant content. Don’t; be surprised if they are eventually updated at some point. Pay particular attention to the quotes from WHO. the earlier one is often quoted by anti-maskers, who may not realized that the WHO later explained and updated. **

Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others

You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. Everyone should wear a cloth face cover in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

  • Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
  • Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker. Currently, surgical masks and N95 respirators are critical supplies that should be reserved for healthcare workers and other first responders.
  • Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.

Read updated information on what the CDC says about face mask https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html

If you are on the internet or social media even a little, you may have seen an image with a disclaimer printed on a box of an ear-loop mask. The picture is at this link-click HERE to read the post that I partially quote below. This image is what many Mask-Resister continue to panic share on Facebook. A friend actually shared it less than a week ago although the image has been debunked by numerous sources and blocked.

My response has been, ‘Not all masks are created equal. Wear the right mask for the job. And consider that that company wanted to cover their backside in case of a lawsuit.”

As I was searching for articles to support the Mask-Resistenc claims I ran across this post that supports my guess about ‘cover the proverbial behinds of the company.” And yes, I did find an image shared by the anti-maskers as a real image – not photoshopped. However, the claim is exactly true or false. Again I must say that not all masks are created equal and wear the right masks for the job. ( Below I will explore different kinds of masks- far more than what you cared to know.)

… steps are necessary to combat a virus they openly admit is harmless to the vast majority of people – the question becomes: Do masks actually do anything to prevent the spread of this disease? Or respiratory diseases in general?

… some mask manufacturers don’t seem to think so. Printing this warning on the side of the box:…

…, in case that’s just a company seeking to prevent liability, maybe we should look at some proper scientific research on the subject.

https://off-guardian.org/2020/06/06/coronavirus-fact-check-6-does-wearing-a-mask-do-anything/

A facemask alone is NOT a 100% guarantee of not contracting this viral disease. And no expert ever said a mask would be the ‘cure-all’ alone. A mask is ONLY one step in slowing the spread of this virus.

But, this does not mean this is an “all-or-none” proposition. Wear face masks, social distance, wash your hands in combination for a reduced exposure if the virus is present.

( *See below: cognitive distortions.)

Do we wear a face mask or not wear a face mask?

YIKES! That is the most confusing question of the year. To reinforce the confusion the WHO had to undo a big boo-boo in communication. Yes, anyone can still pull up that video to prove their mislead point about “asymptomatic people not contagious.”

  • WHO walks back claim about asymptomatic coronavirus …

    https://nypost.com/2020/06/09/who-walks-back-claim…

Jun 10, 2020 · The World Health Organization on Tuesday walked back comments from a top official who said it was “very rare” for someone to contract the coronavirus from an asymptomatic carrier

We are told “assume that everyone including you is positive for COVID” but, may not feel sick or look sick, yet, you are contagious and don’t know it.

The only way for a presymptomatic person to know if they are positive or negative for this virus is to be contacted by someone who knows they had contact with you with they still were a “silent carrier” and to have a COVID-19 test. ( There is now another sticky issue with the presumed COVID-19 positive person )

You may be contacted by a Contact Tracer who was given your name by a person who tested positive. ( That person may only have mild symptoms or could be very ill.)

The mask-resistance is often opposed to names being collected then called. One good friend of mine whom I love dearly, but, don’t see eye to eye on this pandemic said to me, “I don’t want the government to know who my friends are. It is none of Uncle Sam’s business.” and he/she is not alone in thinking this.

I had a few choice replies that ended the conversation in a huff. And that is OK.

I pointed out that Contact Tracing is nothing new. The Public Health department has been doing that for a very long time with sexually transmitted diseases.

You really lose your privacy in regards to who you’ve been “sleeping with”. Your doctor who does your STD tests is obligated to report a venereal disease to the Department of Health who in turn, calls you on the phone asking you to give a list of your sexual partners that you may have infected.

Sexually Transmitted diseases can be prevented by wearing a condom. (Thus we are seeing the term Face Condoms exchanged for the words face-mask. It works kind on in the same way only with different body parts.)

Many people have been comparing COVID-10 to “the flu”, whatever the “FLU” means to them and it can vary widely.

No Non-cents Nanna compares the careless transmission of COVID-19 by not physically distancing and or not wearing a mask to prevent a number of things. (All puns intended Wink-wink…) when you can not social distance to recklessly having sex with someone when you know that you have an STD and do NOT wear a condom. Have you heard the saying, “It does NOT take a bucket full- It only takes a drop,” to make a baby.)?. Those little boogers

Some other people have commented on Facebook posts that “Wearing a mask is the first step in being controlled by the government“.( Not my words.), “History repeats itself. Haven’t you ever read 1984?”

***I really have to laugh at this failed attempt to give credible reference to the notion that “Big Brother is watching”. I can not disagree more with the fact that our privacy is violated every day since we had cells phone, internet access, and post our lives on social media. We have willingly given up every reasonable expectation to privacy when we use tall of those means of communication I listed and more. Most people have failed to ever read the Terms of Service. The TOS is like signing a document without reading the fine print.

WAKE-UP! We did it to ourselves! How can we blame the United States government by agreeing to give up your privacy by posting your every move; your political preference, your mood swings: your opinion, all of the activities you do with your friends, and pictures of your family?

Have you figured out why I laugh out loud at the comment, “History repeats itself? Haven’t you ever read 1984?”

I think that 1984 would be a wonderful book to discuss by comparing the novel to the current events is 2020. But, that is for another time.

Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London, in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. Currently, the Party is forcing the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English novelist George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell’s ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, Nineteen Eighty-Four centres on the consequences of government over-reach, totalitarianismmass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of all persons and behaviours within society.[2][3] More broadly, it examines the role of truth and facts within politics and their manipulation.

The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984, when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual waromnipresent government surveillancehistorical negationism, and propaganda.

Nineteen Eighty-Four has become a classic literary example of political and dystopian fiction. Many terms used in the novel have entered common usage, including Big BrotherdoublethinkthoughtcrimeNewspeakRoom 101telescreen2 + 2 = 5prole, and memory holeNineteen Eighty-Four also popularised the adjective “Orwellian“, connoting things such as official deception, secret surveillance, brazenly misleading terminology, and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state

History Does Repeat Itself

There are several quotes about history repeating itself and are relevant to both sides of The Great Mask Debate. I don’t know everything there is to know about everything. But I do know how to Google.

The relevance of looking back to the past is how epidemiologists figure out the patterns in the spread of disease. Yes, you can see that history does repeat itself when you compare notes about SARS and the Spanish Flu of 1918.

Scientists use models to predict what will happen if we do nothing to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2 or what may work to slow the spread by looking at outbreaks and global pandemics in history. They make guestimates based on history. All the research is trial and error until they find a workable solution. YES, some of the early theories were wrong- so they kept working these last 6 to 9 months when it was realized that people were dying of some weird kind of pneumonia that turned out to be a novel ( new) unknown viral diseases.

History Repeats Itself Quotes. History repeats itself, the first as tragedy, then as farce. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
In one of my earlier No Non-cents Nanna posts, I wrote about something most of us babyboomers’ parents feared ‘the commies”/ Communism. That fear is being revisited upon us today. From the comments that I have read by Mask-Ressisters often that starts with “WAKE UP! You are being controlled by the government.” Or ” You are blindly following the leader.” Or ” Stop living in fear. All of you Sheeple mask wearers don’t think for yourselves. The government controls your thoughts. You are “brainwashed.”
In my experienced opinion, I believe that Mask-Resistance is projecting their fear by repeating what their group leaders tell them. (See below for resources on cult behavior.)

What does the word “Sheeple” mean?

Sheeple, a combination of the words sheep and people, is defined as people who follow a person or an idea blindly. An example of sheeple are the people who follow a cult leader. YourDictionary definition and usage example. “Sheeple.”. YourDictionary.

Epidemiology experts have look at the history of the Spanish Flu of 1918.

Here’s one ‘remarkable’ difference between COVID-19 and the 1918 Spanish flu

There are also similarities between the 1918 influenza and SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China

The 1918 Spanish flu’s second wave was even more devastating than the first wave.’

— Ravina Kullar, an adjunct faculty member at the University of California, Los Angeles

The 2020 coronavirus and 1918 Spanish influenza pandemics share many similarities… one key point.

“A major difference between Spanish flu and COVID-19 is the age distribution of fatalities,”

…similarities between influenza and COVID-19, … nearly identical symptoms: fever, coughing, night sweats, body aches, tiredness, and nausea and diarrhea in the most severe cases. Like all viruses, neither is treatable with antibiotics….both be spread through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, but they come from two different virus families — and ongoing research to develop a universal vaccine for influenza shows how tricky both influenza viruses and coronaviruses can be.

1918 flu pandemic, “mortality was high in people younger than 5 years old, 20-40 years old, and 65 years and older.

The high mortality in healthy people… in the 20-40 year age group, was a unique feature of this pandemic,” the CDC said.

With no vaccine to protect against influenza infection and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with influenza infections, control efforts worldwide were limited to non-pharmaceutical interventions.”

COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, has already proved extremely infectious.

The defiance of mask-wearing is nothing new. Back in 1918, there were Mask-Resisters as well as there are today in 2020. Below is history repeating itself.

Have we all learned something from the history 100 years ago?

Don’t forget that the Old Testament in the Christian Bible tells about numerous epidemics ( First Passover Genesis Chapter 18) and quarantines as well. Pandemics are nothing new.

When Mask-Wearing Rules in the 1918 Pandemic Faced Resistance

Most people complied, but some resisted (or poked holes in their masks to smoke).

…influenza pandemic of 1918 and 1919 most deadly flu outbreak in history, killing up to 50 million people worldwide.

United States… killed around 675,000 people, local governments … initiatives to try to stop its spread… varied by region… closing schools and places of public amusement, enforcing “no-spitting” ordinances… use handkerchiefs or disposable tissues and requiring people to wear masks in public.

Mask-wearing ordinances mainly… in the western states…appears most people complied … still fighting in World War I, and officials framed anti-flu measures as a way to protect the troops from the deadly outbreak.

As one Red Cross PSA put it, “the man or woman or child who will not wear a mask now is a dangerous slacker.

.. sense of wartime duty—and the fear of being seen as a “slacker”—may have motivated those who complied with mask orders… San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Phoenix.

some complained that the masks were uncomfortable, ineffective or bad for business. Officials were caught in public without masks.

… after the war ended… no longer a sense … should wear masks to keep the troops safe, some dissenters formed an “Anti-Mask League” in San Francisco.

October 1918, the Seattle Daily Times carried the headline “Influenza Veils Set New Fashion: Seattle Women Wearing Fine Mesh With Chiffon Border to Ward Off Malady.”

Yet there was also debate within the medical and scientific community about whether multiple-ply gauze masks were effective either.

.. Detroit health commissioner… said gauze masks were too porous to prevent the spread of the flu among the public…. masks are most effective when worn properly..

… Phoenix.. most people apparently complied with the city’s mask order… poked holes in their masks to smoke— ( Please do not try this in 2020.)

American Pandemic: The Lost Worlds of the 1918 Influenza Epidemic. “Some people argue against them because they say that they create fear in the public, and that we want to keep people calm; which I think is really an excuse to critique them because someone doesn’t want to wear them.”,,,says Nancy Bristow,

…San Francisco’s … At a boxing match, a police photographer captured images of supervisors, a congressman, a justice, a Navy rear-admiral, the city’s health officer, the mayor, all without masks…. $5 fine.. the mayor paid a $50 fine… unlike other “mask slackers,” recieved no prison time…

…surge again in San Francisco… a second mask order…. resistance more intense…. dissenters… physicians… Board of Supervisors formed the “Anti-Mask League,” … public meeting with over 2,000 attendees.

1918 and 1919…. communities that implemented stronger health measures overall fared better than those that didn’t

Wear a Mask for Others

Do we wear a face mask or not wear a face mask? We wear a mask for others similar to wearing a condom for others Only with different body parts.
YIKES! That is the most confusing question of the year 2020: No Non-cents Nanna

To play Devil’s advocate here is a quote for April 6, 2020, below, that is similar to what “anti-maskers” used to argue their belief that “masks do harm or they don’t work.” Let’s keep this in context along with some qualifications. Read the partial quote below then click and read the full article from the source.

A face-mask is not a 100% guarantee that you will not catch the novel 7th coronavirus. A mask is only one step in the mitigation process. And you actually have to cover your nose and face with the mask. Wearing a mask around your neck IS useless!

Mask-Aversion

Disclaimer: This is only food for thought and not intended as legal, medical nor psychological advice. I encourage you to seek out, appropriate counsel.

Children under age 2 can not take off nor put on a maks without help. A person who has seizures can not take off maks during a seizure. People with autism or who have sensory issues may not be able to wear a mask either. Ther are legitimate reasons why people with documented disabilities can not wear a maks. They with these disabilities every day. They may already be accustomed to requesting “reasonable accommodations” without getting pissy”.

Why some Americans say they’ll never wear a mask — and what that says about the U.S.

More than two dozen states now have rules requiring residents to wear masks in stores and public areas.

  • Big-box retailers .. Target and Walmart have mandated that shoppers don a face covering..
  • …the more that masks become embedded in everyday life, the more some people continue to push back.
  • Fueled by mistrust of mainstream information, inconsistent messaging and concerns over the legality of mask mandates, there are some groups across the country that are organizing in protest of mask orders.

, confrontations over mask orders … inside local businesses… some turning violent.

“… research [shows] that there’s a small group of people…when they feel like they’re being controlled, will respond by acting out,” “That might look like breaking the law or, in this case, not following medical recommendations.”

  • … a sense of distress and a lack of understanding of why the masks are necessary.
  • … made worse… World Health Organization, in an effort to ensure that face masks went first to frontline health care workers, declared that masks were not recommended for everyone.
  •  sense of distrust of the government… distrust in the science… unfortunate situation where the science changed — science does that,in situations that are so novel and uncertain… confusing for people.”

How does that feel to you on either side of The Great Mask Debate?

If you have a mask-aversion does this explain why you distrust the authority of public health mandates? Are you needing some practice asking a mask- pusher to, please, listen to your feelings? Ask them to help you work this out instead of pushing. How does it make you feel when you are forced to do something you do not want to do?

If you are strongly pro masks, does this help you to understand why some people “just can’t put on the damn mask”?

I think that we pro-maskers need to spend some kind moments listening to those people who are stuck in their mindset,( I sorry to use those words) Are we pushing too hard to force a mask on someone who emotional can’t do it?

Personal example. My son’s long time friend wanted to stopover. He called that he was coming by. My son forgets to tell him “Mom is having surgery, so if you want to come you have to wear a mask and wash your hands.” So when the man arrived I had laid out a new disposable mask for him, He only agreed to wear the maks before me and my circumstances. So that I did not have to postpone my surgery again. it was hard for the poor guy. He also knew that my son has a serious autoimmune disease that he did not want to risk carrying the virus to him. Both men needed male bonding time that they had been missing out on for months.

Why don’t masks protect the wearer?

There are several possible reasons why masks don’t offer significant protection. First, masks may not do much without eye protection.

While standard and special masks provide incomplete protection, special masks combined with goggles appear to provide complete protection in laboratory experiments.

.. minimal impact of wearing masks – people didn’t use them properly. …. People may also wear masks inappropriately, or touch a contaminated part of the mask when removing it and transfer the virus to their hand, then their eyes and thus to the nose.

Masks may also provide a false sense of security, meaning wearers might do riskier things such as going into crowded spaces and places.

… antibacterial wipes and cleaners … they won’t actually protect you from coronavirus, or any other virus.

… bacteria and viruses are two different germs,…

“Most antibacterial cleaners are also disinfectants, it’s just that they’ve been specially marketed to emphasise their antibacterial properties,” .

“Viruses are more resistant to disinfectants but can still be killed with them. Coronavirus is an envelope virus, which means it is ‘enveloped’ in a fatty layer that can be more easily broken down by cleaning supplies.”

… checking the label to ensure the product has been tested against bacteria and viruses.

As epidemiologists have had time to do studies that are then peer-reviewed we are not having to guess, anymore. We have updated guidelines based on scientific facts as opposed to solely ‘anecdotal accounts’.

I am trying really hard to present the opposing side to wearing-masks. I am having a problem with all the anecdotal sources I find.

What does the word anecdotal mean?
Definition of anecdotal. 1. : based on or consisting of reports or observations of usually unscientific observers. anecdotal evidence. health benefits that may be more anecdotal than factual.

In a number of the more evangelical Christian churches giving a “testimony of what Jesus has done in our lives” is a common practice. I am not saying that “giving a testimony” is good to bad. Telling your personal story in church, from my experience, makes others feel very good and it bonds one another in “Christian faith and love”.

An anecdotal testimony has its place in the church. But, when we are talking about a global pandemic of what we are dealing with currently, COVID-19, we need actual facts from non-biased studies rather than “feel good” moments.

When I have read Anti-Masker posts or comments by Mask-resistors the context is mostly anecdotal opinion passed on without any credits to the sources that they came up with their stance. (See below the quote about plagiarism and why cite the source. It is the legal, ethical, and Biblical thing to do to give credit to the person who came up with the idea, the writing, the music, etc.

Anecdotal evidence

Anecdotal evidence is evidence from anecdotes: evidence collected in a casual or informal manner and relying heavily or entirely on personal testimony.
The term is sometimes used in a legal context to describe certain kinds of testimony which are uncorroborated by objective, independent evidence such as notarized documentation, photographs, audio-visual recordings, etc.

When I try to engage with others on Facebook who are trying to convince me that it is wrong to wear a mask I ask for a URL link to the source that inspired them to come up with that conclusion. Sometimes the engagement ends with then and there. More often than not the person (whom I really do want to tell me where they got their information because I am working on some blogs( does not know what URL is.

I am also curious to know why so many people have no idea that you have to credit a source of information to misinformation. I mean, did NOT everyone at some time in High-School have to do a research paper?

When I blog I may not do the best job in formatting. (I could stand to improve more than my typing.) However, I put short or edited down quotes with clickable links to the resource. When I post an article on Facebook I often put the URL in twice because when the picture comes up the link is clickable on the picture but does not show the URL if copied and pasted.

YES or NO to Face Masks?

I have seen more nasty arguments and mobbing over people’s “rights to not be forced to wear a face mask” on Facebook. There are even laminated cards that appear to be official documentation that the person with this card is exempt from wearing a face maks in public – these are FAKE.

This is an example of an ad that invokes emotions. I should be ordered to cease and desist.IMO. There were also FAKE service dog cards that claimed with their official card “you can take your dog anywhere.” By the way, it is illegal to claim your pet is a “service dog” when it is not trained to help a disabled person function.

Buyer beware…

Some Mask-Resisters are trying to manipulate the system by buying a Fancy Laminated “Mask Exemption Card complete with an official-looking seal. ( Its’ FAKE. See below)

Yes, there are unscrupulous people who would make and sell fora profit FAKE anything to people in a crisis of tragedy.

The words, “Don’t Be Forced to Wear a Muzzle. You Have Rights grab your emotions by the throat. Emotions sell. He knocks the woman’s door telling her that her recently deceased husband had ordered her a special gift with her name printed on the cover. The grieving widow is befuddled so she buys the Bible from the hustler and the little girls who picks-up on the “gift” of taking advantage of the vulnerable who want to do the right thing.

The FAKE card is nothing but a Paper Moon con.

Does this ring a bell with being everything you are told? This is a valid reason why I want to see credible sources rather than “My preacher is a man of God and he told me so.”

How about you? Don’t you want to be told the truth for the real experts? You do know that ministers of the gospel, evangelists, preachers, teachers of God’s word, Imans, priests, etc are licensed to lead, and manage congregations of people within the religious context. None of these people are licensed to practice median over the pulpit or altar.

I just happen to have written a No Non-cents Nanna post related to my statement above. Click to read the 3 quotes below is one of my No Non-cents Nanna’s opinions with credible quotes from sources with clickable URL links.

No No-cents Nanna Makes Statement about CLAIMS Made On-line

PT Barnum said it best, “There is a sucker born every minute.”

It seems all too many people are duped into believing every sensational thing they read online or hear from a “dear friend” who read something on a Facebook*** post about a product, a supplement, or diet that “will cure what ails you”.

I am not saying that your “dear friend” lied to you. I’m not saying, either some or most of what was shared is not true, somewhat true or even 100% fact. .People passed on something in good faith that may or may not be entirely true. I think that more often than not “we” all are victims of marketing tactics the best or even DUPED!

Only your doctor can diagnose, treat or prescribe. It is too early to have any kind off data on what vitamins, herbs, supplements or foods may or may not ward off any COVID-19- BEWARE of false claims.

In general, doctors will tell you to eat a healthy diet- everything in moderation. Some people need to avoid certain food, certain vitamins, certain medications even if those things are natural. Are Pastors Who Defy COVID-19 Safety Measures for Their Church Toxic Leaders?

All across the United States, there are church leaders who are refusing to practice social distancing claiming it is their Constitutional right for church congregations to meet to worship God. (See First Amendment quote below .) May God bless the church groups who are keeping the people safe.

It is my opinion that shepherds have a spiritual, moral and ethical responsibility to protect the flock from harm. Those preachers who are putting their congregations at risk may have toxic power and control issues that need to be explored versus love for one another and for the love of God.

  • Pastors of churches are not licensed to practice law. They are not licensed to practice medicine, either. (See below definitions of practicing medicine and law)

Why then are all these religious people with…

  • …pastoral licenses making legal decisions and medical decisions for the people of their congregation?
  • …is the congregant free to disobey the church leader by following CDC guidelines to shelter in place or self-isolate?
  • …or are church members fearful of shunning; told to leave their church or even fear of going to Hell if they do not follow the leading of the pastors?

The confusion came early on in 2020 when the powers that be were afraid that people would buy up and hoard face masks like some people bought cases and cases of toilet paper and hand sanitizer- leaving the shelves bare. Public health professionals lament that trust in face masks is hampered by the government’s earlier recommendation against them.

Fauci told TheStreet mid-June that he did not recommend face masks at the beginning of the outbreak to conserve supplies for healthcare workers. On Thursday Fauci told NPR that the administration’s initial ambivalence towards face masks was ‘detrimental in getting the message across.’ https://www.npr.org/2020/07/03/886905055/widespread-use-of-face-masks-could-save-tens-of-thousands-of-lives-models-projec

There are different kinds of face masks designed for different jobs. In a hospital setting such as in surgery, the surgeon and his assistants will wear surgical masks. Not so they are protected from the patient, but so they are not breathing or spitting on the open wound – the surgeon wears a mask to protect the patient.

During this pandemic, we “wear a mask for others protection in case we are contagious and do not know it, yet.

COVID-19 Resources on Face Masks and Surgical Masks

From the website of the FDA https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/personal-protective-equipment-infection-control/n95-respirators-surgical-masks-and-face-masks

Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others

  • You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick.
  • The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
  • Everyone should wear a cloth face cover in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
  • Read updated information on what the CDC says about face mask https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html

A facemask alone is NOT a 100% guarantee of not contracting this viral disease.

But, this does not mean this is an “all-or-none” proposition. Wear face masks, social distance, wash your hands in combination for a reduced exposure if the virus is present.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

Face masks mainly help prevent the spread of the virus from people who may have been infected but do not show symptoms of COVID-19.

  • However, misinformation, politics, beliefs and fear have been pushing some… away from using facial coverings.
  • …some people are unable to use face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic because of health concerns. In San Antonio, authorities allow residents not to cover their faces all the time if they have asthma, autism, sensory processing difficulties and mental health challenges.
  • “Initially… we were told that masks are really for people who are sick,” “And that’s to keep you from getting other people sick, and that it wasn’t necessary for us to all wear masks. ‘Save the masks for the health care workers,’ … now it’s, ‘Everybody needs to wear a mask.’”
  • Some Americans believe mask requirements are against their Constitutional rights. Jackson said people have a “sense of entitlement” that makes them think they have the right to do whatever they want in the country.“But that’s not true. You can’t go to the store without shoes. You can’t go to the store without a shirt on…
  • Religion… people refuse to wear face masks because of their faith in their religious leader…. this coping mechanism occurs as they want to “whole heartedly put their trust in God or whomever that higher power is they believe in.”
  • …some people experiencing anxiety… hard to breathe with a face mask, which could make people feel “more contained,” especially those affected by forced isolation under lockdown measures.

Why do you have to wear pants when you go to the store or sit on your neighbor’s couch? Do you change your underwear? Think about it. then think about wearing the same mask day after day without washing it- PEW! It’s smelling pretty ripe, doesn’t? Why? Come on, now you know why.

Well, duh! We would leave traces more or less of our body fluids. Respiratory drop from our nose and mouth are also body fluids that have germs no one else wants from you, especially if you have some kind of contagious bug.

Kind of gross when stated this way, I know.

For those with legitimate reasons for not wearing a mask, I strongly urge you to call ahead to a business to make reasonable accommodations or special arrangements to assist you. Please do not just show up demanding to do your own thing or think you can sue a business if you don’t get your own way.

As a personal example, I do get really hot even without a mask when I am exerting myself.- I will wheeze. This means I need to plan ahead if I have to do essential grocery shopping. I will go early in the day when the temperature is cooler.

My son has Advanced Primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis. People with MS do not tolerate heat. I have to keep our home around 68 degrees. or he has more painful legs spasms and gets very weak. He had been catching up on neurology appointments at a large University Hospital and Clinics. We have no choice but to wear a mask in that facility.

Wearing a mask does adversely affect my son’s medical condition. We don’t raise a fuss. Instead, I freeze ice packs to put in his “cooling vest” to try to keep him cool. We will also schedule appointments as early in the day as we can when the temperature will be cooler. It is my responsibility as an individual to do the best I can to comply and meet my son’s specific needs. If I can not find a solution then I have to ask for help.

Why are Public Health doctors or the Surgeon General wanting us to “slow the spread” or flatten the curve“?

What is the big deal, anyway, about “overwhelming the medical system? Won’t doctors and nurses always be at the hospital to admit patients?

Medical providers are human beings as well. They are getting exhausted and sick themselves. We could predict that. by looking at past flu epidemics.

Therefore ‘elective” surgeries were canceled; some departments have shut down laying off nurses and more staff to make room for COVID patients. In doing so, many people delayed seeking timely medical care.

Wear a CLEAN Mask

A disposable mask is meant to be worn only once. Dispose of in a trash bag. Please do not drop it on the street.

When you get home take off your mask- do not touch the part where your nose and mouth have been.

Wash your hands and face.

Wash your cloth mask after every use.

(Would we wear a used condom? Why not? it is same reason why you throw away a disposable mask or you wash a mask every time after you wear it.)

Reasonable Accommodations

For those with legitimate reasons for not wearing a mask, I strongly urge you to call ahead to a business to make reasonable accommodations or special arrangements to assist you. Please do not just show up demanding to do your own thing or think you can sue a business if you don’t get your own way. I have always advised my clients and I do this for my disabled adult child- CALL ahead to ask the manager or owner to sit you with Reasonable Accommodations.

Yes, some of us are allergic to a number of things. Personally I get a wild rash from nickel. I don’t wear jewelry for that reason. those little bendy parts for the nose ina maks may have nickel.

I have no intention of shaming anyone for getting contact dermatitis from facemasks. But, if you have seen the cognitively distorted post on Facebook warning that you will get a rash with a facemask – the truth is, yes, some may get a rash ( read the link below.) Try another kind of mask. Not EVERYONE will have contact dermatitis.

Most people will not get Mask-ne or dermatitis from wearing a mask. To say that “all masks cause skin breakouts” is an all or none generalization. ( See cognitive distortions below.)

This is simply a heads up and not intended to treat nor diagnose. See your doctor for a referral to a dermatologist if need be.

I’ve developed a rash from my mask. What is it?

While you shouldn’t self-diagnose a rash or other skin irritation, one issue Dr. Davis has dealt with at her practice that people should be aware of is allergic reactions to face-mask materials. She points specifically to “the metal nose bridge (if nickel is in the alloy) or elastic (rubber allergy) or any textile-specific coatings on the fabric.”

The nickel issue will be familiar to people who wear earrings or other jewelry, and may be more of a concern for people wearing medical or medical-style coverings. …

Would everyone wearing face masks help us slow the pandemic?

By Kelly Servick

Even experts who favor masking the masses say their impact on the spread of disease is likely to be modest….some health experts, including the director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, think that’s a mistake.

… afraid to promote mask buying amid dire shortages at hospitals. … as the pandemic wears on, some public health experts think government messages discouraging mask wearing should shift. ( July 2020 the recomnedaiotn did shift.)

Did you see this FALSE CLAIM?

There were pictures of a box of facemask that circulated as “proof” that masks are “stupid.

Every time I saw this as I ask the person who re-shared it if they could come up with the source it came from..a URL or an author? No one could do that. I will state that is not proof of anything if you can’t cite the source.

While doing research during the 24- hours that I worked on pulling this post together I did find a reference to that image and false claim.

In marketing remember this: Emotions sell.

The claim: Nonrespirator ear loop masks do not protect people against coronavirus, and it is explicitly stated on the packaging of masks

As mask-wearing has become a common method to stop the spread of COVID-19, posts circulating online claim disposable ear loop masks do not provide any protection against the virus.

May 21 Facebook post shows a picture of a box of the disposable masks, where the warning label cautions, “THIS PRODUCT IS AN EAR LOOP MASK. THIS PRODUCT IS NOT A RESPIRATOR AND WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY PROTECTION AGAINST COVID-19(CORONAVIRUS) OR OTHER VIRUSES OR CONTAMINANTS.”

The caption reads, “When you shame people for not wearing masks but then read the side of the box of the masks you spent $25.00 on.” The user who shared the post did not respond to USA TODAY for comment.

As businesses begin to reopen across the nation, controversy surrounding mask requirements has created a challenging environment for business owners, and false claims about masks have only continued.

Some people refuse to wear face masks…

It’s complicated.

There are legit reasons for some to not wear a mask on private property. WATCH: The most epic public mask meltdowns caught on tape (so far)

Like this Karen in a bedazzled Bebe t-shirt and white tennis shoes who freaked out at a Trader Joe’s in North Hollywood, California when she was told she needed to wear a mask inside the store as mandated by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti….”
“Or this delightful young Karen who violently hurled packages of frozen meat from her cart while shouting obscenities after she spent over an hour breathing all over a Fiesta grocery store in Dallas, Texas…”
“Or this elderly Chad from Florida, where coronavirus cases have increased fivefold in two weeks, who lost his balance and face planted on the floor after assaulting a Walmart employee who told him he couldn’t enter without a mask…(Note from Nanna this not funny.)

“Words truly cannot express my disappointment in humanity these days. I know there are bigger problems in the nation right now but more and more it seems the people who are just trying to stand up for the right things are getting bulldozed by bullies.

“I was at New York City Bagel Coffee House on Broadway and 30th Street getting my bagel and noticed a patron (pictured below) who was coughing, not covering her mouth, and not wearing a mask. I politely pointed this out to the wom

Not one but two customers got into a screaming match with employees at an El Ahorro grocery store in Dallas, Texas after they were blocked from entering unless they put on face coverings…

“A bar-goer in Belmont, California was caught on surveillance tape coughing on a bartender after he informed her she would need to wear a mask if she wasn’t going to socially distance from others…

“A lady wearing a floral beach coverup (not at the beach) screamed spat on a gas station employee in Colorado after he said she needed to wear a mask while buying lottery tickets…

Here’s a video that went viral back in May of a woman explaining how wearing a face mask caused her to have a panic attack, making her heart beat faster and her palms feel clammy.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, as well as nearly every public health expert and elected official in America (aside from Donald Trump and a handful of his minions), recommend people wear cloth face masks when out in public to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Related: WATCH: Randy Rainbow to Trump: ‘Cover Your Freakin’ Face’

Yet, for whatever reason, there are still those who refuse to comply with simple guidelines put forth by the world’s leading public health officials. Some have resorted to throwing temper tantrums in public, giving rise to the latest viral video trend: mask meltdowns.

Why won’t some people wear face masks during a pandemic? It’s complicated

Their reasons are many, but why do those who won’t wear face masks in public during a pandemic refuse to do so?

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center:

  1. 65% of adults said they regularly wear masks in public.
  2. Fifteen percent said they wear them some of the time
  3. most of the remaining 20% of respondents to the survey said they don’t wear masks at all.

Then again, perhaps we are using stinkin’ thinkin’. In psychobabble, the term is cognitive dissonance.

There are some cognitive distortions that the mask resistance has adopted and repeated.

I used these examples above: “the first step of government control to see who is compliant: “a mask is the ‘mark of the beast”; “mask-wearers are idiots who live in fear”: “masks don’t work and they cause high CO2 levels and bacterial pneumonia

15 Common Cognitive Distortions

What’s a cognitive distortion and why do so many people have them?

Cognitive distortions are simply ways that our mind convinces us of something that isn’t really true.

… inaccurate thoughts are usually used to reinforce negative thinking or emotions — telling ourselves things that sound rational and accurate… only serve to keep us feeling bad about ourselves.

“I always fail when I try to do something new; I therefore fail at everything I try.”… example of “black or white” (or polarized) thinking.

… seeing things in absolutes — … fail at one thing… fail at all things.

“I must be a complete loser and failure” … example of overgeneralization — taking a failure at one specific task and generalizing it their very self and identity.

identify this kind of “stinkin’ thinkin’,”

By refuting the negative thinking over and over again, it will slowly diminish overtime and be automatically replaced by more rational, balanced thinking.

‘Anti-maskers’ in Florida have bizarre reasons for not wearing masks, netizens have hilarious comebacks

Many of them stated that it was ‘God’s will’ for us to breathe and by being ‘ordered’ to wear the mask, they are taking away their rights.

One of the reasons also made it to Twitter. … “I don’t wear a mask for the same reason I don’t wear underwear. Things gotta breathe.”

… lockdowns are being lifted in a staggered manner…. realize that they have to live with the virus with strict measures. This includes social distancing and wearing masks at all times.

In fact, in Florida, a group called ‘Anti-Maskers’ who are promoting the narrative of the ‘side-effects’ of wearing a mask.

Posted on Facebook by a page ‘Now This’, a meeting took place at the Palm Beach County Commission where the ones opposing the masks spoke out their reasons.

Some of them were quite bizarre and weird. Watch the video to see some of them:

Flatten the Curve

During the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 we Stayed-At -Home and gained weight. Let’s wear our masks and social distance to slow the spread. If we have to go on Lock-Down again I don’t think they make big-girl-panties big enough to fit this girl…just saying… flatten those curves.

Flattening the curve refers to community isolation measures that keep the daily number of disease cases at a manageable level for medical providers. (Image: © CDC) Efforts to completely contain …

…if we can delay the spread of the virus so that new cases aren’t popping up all at once, but rather over the course of weeks or months, “then the system can adjust and accommodate all the people who are possibly going to get sick and possibly need hospital care.” People would still get infected… but at a rate that the health care system could actually keep up with —

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/03/13/815502262/flattening-a-pandemics-curve-why-staying-home-now-can-save-lives

Some medical facilities did have a shortage of PPE short for personal protective equipment.

That included surgical masks and more complex masks like the N95.

Officials were concerned that people would hoard masks like they did toilet paper when Lock-down or Stay-at-home orders were announced. You may still see older news feeds of posts on Facebook where Americans were told to “not buy masks”. ( That is an outdated statement that was a big mistake.)

Why won’t some people wear face masks during a pandemic? It’s complicated

Their reasons are many, but why do those who won’t wear face masks in public during a pandemic refuse to do so?
News reports have captured a number of rallies and protests against the masks. Excuses seem to vary.
  •  don’t want the government to tell them what to do
  • orders to wear masks violate their personal freedom.
  •  complain of breathing problems with the masks.
  •  don’t believe the masks prevent infections.

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center:

65% of adults said they regularly wear masks in public. Fifteen percent said they wear them some of the time, while most of the remaining 20% of respondents to the survey said they don’t wear masks at all.

Rule Out means…

Rule out means to eliminate as a possibility.
It is important to note that this does not mean that the patient has been
diagnosed with _____. In doctor notes, rule outs are typically listed underneath a diagnoses that have already been established.

The Process of Differential Diagnosis

How does your doctor figure out your diagnosis?

Their thought process should work like that of a detective. Using clues drawn from your descriptions of symptoms, your medical tests, their knowledge of medicine, and additional input, your doctor will make a list of all the possible diagnoses that could explain what is medically wrong with you.

Then, one by one, using those same clues, they will begin to narrow down the list by finding clues that don’t fit. That process of elimination is called “differential diagnosis.” Ultimately they will be left with one diagnosis, and that’s the one they give you.

The worldwide web is an amazing wealth of information. Knowing how to Google can be a blessing or a curse. The same thing goes with reading the opinions for others and false information shared on social media. Social meid friends are not qualified to act as your licensed doctor. I know, you want to save money or you are too embarrassed to admit that tho you eat healthily and exercise that you might be a little sick.

Avoid “treatments your doctor won’t tell you about conspiracy theories”. If you have the time to click on signs and symptoms I have listed you will quickly see that even a cough can be caused by an enormous list of issues. You need the proper help to take care of your self or your child. I hope this post will get you started on cutting the confusion on whether or not to follow a shared post on Facebook or follow through with proper medical advice.

But, I don’t feel sick at all!

You may not feel sick, but, if you have been around someone who is contagious with COVID-19 you might be positive as well without showing any signs or symptoms.

Yeah, I know, this does not make sense. Yet, with a number of viral illnesses, the infected person who will be sick in a few may be highly contagious and not know. that is why it is why contagious diseases are supposed to be reported to your Public Health department. Wouldn’t you want to know that there is x disease going around so take precautions or figure out Plan B for your work schedule?

The really big kicker about how COVID-19 can spread…

  • Some people who are positive for COVID-19 show no sighs nor symptoms of this infectious virus. The big word for that is *ASYMPTOMATIC. They are “silent carriers.”. who have no clue that they are contagious and infecting others. Well, why would they know if they are doing what they normally do and don’t even have the sniffles?
  • There are new studies out that have been mentioned on a video from WHO concerning whether truly *asymptomatic people who test positive are contagious or not. There seems to be some question if all are really without symptoms or are denying minor symptoms when they are contagious. Currently, it is my understanding instead of only referring to one who is without symptoms or with minor symptoms the word, presymptomatic may be more appropriate. I will have to update this when things have been better clarified by the experts.
  • Some people who may only have a few minor tickles in their throat sluffing it off as sinus drainage (denial) may be the “super spreader” as in this choir practice that made the news.

…asymptomatic means in medical terms – the absence of symptoms.
… the term symptomatic, meaning symptoms are present.
… as doctors try to diagnose disease while it is still in the asymptomatic phase.

What’s important … you may feel fine, your body is not… you’re unlikely to change your behaviors when you feel well if what you have is transmissible, it’s likely that you are passing it to others.

Screening tests … in those who are asymptomatic… monitoring or early treatment. Unfortunately, many do not seek such an evaluation when they are asymptomatic because they are unaware of a reason to do so.

Using a bandana as a COVID-19 face mask?

You might want to reconsider, video shows

Without any covering at all, coughs expelled droplets up to 12 feet in under a minute, but most of them had fallen to the ground by that point, the researchers said, but still they traveled “farther than the currently recommended 6-foot distancing guideline.”

…oated in the air for up to three minutes in a non-windy environment, the researchers found.

Droplets traveled about 2.5 inches with a homemade cotton mask — similar to those the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend — about 8 inches with the cone-style mask and a little over a foot with a folded cotton handkerchief, according to the study.

…bandana, the cough traveled about 3 feet 7 inches — the worst of them all aside from no mask — even though the material had the highest thread count compared to the other coverings, the researchers said.

Mixed messages …

John Brownstein, an epidemiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and an ABC News contributor, said there was “definitely confusion” over face coverings early on, though it was “partly due to improved understanding of virus transmission over time.” As the science surrounding how the virus was transmitted evolved, so did the guidance.

Even top disease experts were slow to get on the same page. The World Health Organization and CDC initially decreed masks were needed only for those who were sick or caring for those who were sick. Surgeon General Jerome Adams even tweeted in February that Americans should stop buying them.

“Seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS!,” he wrote. “They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”

… even after that guidance changed, some leaders were slow to adapt.

Some Americans appear to have ignored the guidance.

Officials in Miami, Florida were forced to close a park on Monday after law enforcement issued over 7,000 warnings to those who failed to wear face coverings over the weekend.

Others have been more extreme in their resistance.

After some businesses in Stillwater, Oklahoma, began reopening on Friday with a requirement that customers wear masks, Stillwater City Manager Norman McNickle said in a statement that some employees were “threatened with physical violence” by people who “cite the mistaken belief the requirement is unconstitutional.”

Dr. Simone Wildes, an Infectious Diseases Physician at South Shore Health and an ABC News medical contributor, said that wearing masks are not only a “quick solution” but an easy one.

Fear of all kinds of things has always given people the incentive to do the things that we may want to procrastinate or even avoid. And who would have thought that fear could cause our health, religion, and politics could all be combined in a new Civil War in the United States. M-m-m? Perhaps The Great Mask War is simply history repeating itself, again demonstrated in our critical thinking skill or lack thereof?

In my final thoughts to conclude this verbose post, I want to share a very short portion of an older No Non-cents Nanna blog post from my own personal history about 60 years ago, when I was inspired by fear. This same fear is at the heart of the anti-mask movement in 2020: the fear of losing our freedom as promised in the Constitution of the United States of America.

Hide God’s Word From the Commies

In the ’60s the rumor was that there was “a Commie behind every tree.” We school kids practiced “duck and cover” in case of an attack. ( I thought that Commies were synonymous with the Devil.)

Jess and Olive taught us to “hide the word of God in our hearts” because we never knew when the Russians would come in to steal and burn our Bibles.”

Olive taught us if we loved Jesus we would be saved if and when the soldiers from the Soviet Socialist Republic came to town to steal our bibles then burn them. I am not exaggerating my understanding and fear. Perhaps it was my age.( This never did happen as I feared.)

Premier Nikita Krushov was the leader of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Russia. That very scary man came to the United States to appear at the United Nations. He did something that Russians do, but, Americans don’t do. He took off his shoe then pounded his shoe on the table at the UN. He said something in Russian which was translated as, “We will bury you.”

Below was a headline in newspapers of a frightening incident in 1960 that was highlighted on the news over and over.

From the No Non-cents Nanna blog post titled Sunday School Lesson Before the Cult Invaded

The Russian leader scared the crap out of me when I saw him on the news.

If that was not enough to be fearful that the Reds would steal my Bible after the shoe pounding at the UN the Russian leader would be touring American farms. One model farm was actually a farm in Washington, Iowa across the field from where we were living, at that time. ( This is a true coincidence.)

It was freaking scary for a kid who was afraid the Russians would burn our Bibles. Now that was too close for comfort.

The Moral of My Childhood Story.

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15).

I remember this true story because it made such an impact on my life when I was 10. But, if I had been an adult at the time, I think the way I retold the same event would be very different then I have told in on my post.

While my reactions at the time may seem immature, retelling my version woke me up to the fact that John Robert Stevens had a master plan of how he was going to subtly brainwash the congregations to submit to his vision of the Kingdom of God for his future cult.

Matthew 7:21 NASB: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord …

Not everyone who says to me, ‘LordLord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Perhaps it is a starting point for some of us to figure out when, where and how this power and control mess over the flock started to get tangled and where to unravel the truth.

My words are my opinion from my disturbing memories as a child in the early years before it all ran amuck.

I must conclude that the followers of the Mask- Resistance may share the same emotions as those of us who feel we are also guided by God-inspired wisdom to follow standards of medical prevention. The invisible force behind the Anti-Mask Movement is a completely different story. that unknown entity, in my opinion, has provoked sore spots and emotions of good people to do their dirty work thus shifting the blame to distract from their own selfish hidden agenda. Someone is taking advantage of this pandemic to wag some very big dogs.

In reference to the term “Wag the Dog” also refers to the movie Wag the Dog which relevant, IMO to what is happening in the 2020 election year and the global pandemic.

Wag the dog is, in politics, the act of creating a diversion from a damaging issue. It stems from the generic use of the term to mean a small and seemingly unimportant entity (the tail) controls a bigger, more important one (the dog). The phrase originates in the saying “a dog is smarter than its tail, but if the tail were smarter, then it would wag the dog.”

To ‘wag the dog’ means to purposely divert attention from what would otherwise be of greater importance, to something else of lesser significance. By doing so, the lesser-significant event is catapulted into the limelight, drowning proper attention to what was originally the more important issue.

In conclusion, I have not changed my mind as Pro-mask during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I was only able to strengthen my belief that masks are one step in reducing the viral load transmission when in close range of a contagious individual under the circumstances that would cause aerosol spray. I am a former licensed Registered Nurse.who is semi-retired.so, yes, I am somewhat biased.

I had not mentioned in this very long pst that I grew up with parents who were Natural food folks before that was popular. I had most of the childhood diseases. ( I did miss polio when it was going around. )

When vaccinations were being given my parents were the original group of anti-vaxxers. Besides being embarrassed at my parents’ attitude refusing to allow my siblings and I to get the sugar cube of polio and other new immunizations. I somehow escaped not getting the smallpox vaccine- I have the scar on my arm to prove it.

While may parents were well-read and passionate about their not yet popular belief systems that included Evangelical practices. I did learn a lot about the natural way of life. I read their books and I am grateful to have that knowledge base on top of my medical profession.

But, when I went to nursing school, I had classes in chemistry, biology, anatomy, and psychology, and psychology. I understood how the human body works, but my parents did not. I think that the knowledge deficit ( nursing terminology) plagues non-medically educated people as I think most followers of the Anti-mask and anti-school, anti-vaxxers, alternative medicine folks are.

I mean no offense as I have my feet planted on both sides of the fence. There are huge chunks of facts missing in the alternatives to medicine which is not perfect either.

I might lean more in favor of Mask-Resistance due to the fact that I am quite an independent thinker. My dander raises when someone calls me a “sheeple”. Big mistakes HUGE because they don’t know me.

I see the Anti-mask following as victims of some secret cult leader. who spoon feeds the cause with half-truths; demonstrating projecting, gas-lighting and bullying of the opposition (Pro-mask): cognitive distortions: out of context quotes; emotionally invoking wording: and presenting facts that are not contrary to sounds medical practices- maybe I could stop shaking my head over the small nuggets of truth combined with lack of critical thing skill of non-medical opinions eluding to being qualified to diagnosis, treat, and prescribe. ( Giving unlicensed medical advice.)

If only the contrary -to -mask-followers could stop the immature name-calling; the lack of citing up to date information that has not been crediting sources for relevant accurate studies, using opinions and fake news to support their beliefs.- maybe we could get along and stand united in our efforts to slow the spread of this very contagious new disease.

I am Malika Bourne the No Non-cents Nanna encouraging you to make good choices.
