6 More Things You Never Thought About the Flu

To help you be better informed on more things you may have never thought of regarding influenza I put together 6 more basic answers to question on Influenza and more.

The Flu is not on most people minds too often, uless you are trying to not catch it from other people. I took the liberty of collecting great information and sharing very good links in this posts to get you started on question you can use the answeres to.

This is not intended as a substitute for medical advice.

  1. Q: Can babies, dogs, chickens get the flu? A: YES
  2. Q.Should you go to the Emergency Room when you get a sniffle? A. Consult your doctor if a “sniffle” is life threatening to you. If not, you probabbly don’t need to be in the ER.
  3. Q. Who to ask or not to ask for advice when yout think you may being coming down with the flu? A. Consult your health care provider.
  4. Q. What is the job of the front desk receptionist in the doctor office? A Free up the doc for patient care.
  5. Q If people get a flu shot or had the l flu aleady will you they get sick with influenza more than once a season? A. YES
  6. A.If I never get sick and everyone else has the flu shot why should I bother? A. If you have to ask then you may need to read to become better informed.(Snarky answer)

Not everyone can get a flu vaccination:

I write a blog. I can not give you medical advice. But you can click this link to CDC website to see if you may be one of those people who should not get the yearly Influenzation vaccination then discuss this with out doctor.

This page lists all people recommended to get a flu vaccine, who can and can’t get the flu shot and who should take precautions or talk to their doctor or other health care professional before vaccination. Talk to your doctor or nurse if you have any questions regarding which flu vaccine is best for you and your family.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/whoshouldvax.htm

Infants under the age of 6 months are too young to get a flu shot. But, they can get the flu even if they are breast feeding. Read below how parents can help keep their babies from beng exposed to the flu. ( Day cares; doctors offices, hospitals etc have strict rules to help control incetious diseases. FOLLOW the RULEs please.)

What if you are pregnant, have an autoimmune disease or are allergic eggs? Should I get a flu shot?

Don’t as me. I’m not your doctor? For God’s Sake don’t be asking people on Facebook, either. Click the link to the CDC and talk to your health care provider.

The quote below from the CDC address indications for what kind of flu shot for certain individuals:

Note: There are certain flu shots that have different age indications. For example, people younger than 65 years of age should not get the high-dose flu shot or the flu shot with adjuvant, and people who are younger than 18 years old or older than 64 years old should not get the intradermal flu shot.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/whoshouldvax.htm

Misconceptions about Seasonal Flu and Flu Vaccines

No, the “Flu Shot” does not give any one the flu. Some peopel make stuff up then the people pass on misconceptionsa that are not true.

Of cource it is possible to alrady be eposed and coming down with the somehint ( flue, measles, mumps etc) before you get the vaccine. So don’t be blaming the caccine. Get your shots early.

Click this link to read what the FDA has to say;

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/misconceptions.htm

Who Should be Prioritized for Flu Vaccination During a Vaccine Shortage

There are years or some reason whan vaccines are in short supply. Then the vaccine has to be prioitized. Click here to read waht the CDC says.Who Should be Prioritized for Flu Vaccination During a Vaccine Shortage

Note: IV bags are in short supply in 2018. IV bag shortaage is quoted in the post right below. click to read the entire post.

You Don’t Know as Much About the Flu as You Think You Do

I hope you don’t wait until the flu is in epidemic proportion to start wondering if you should get shot or not. There may be reasons why some people do have to delay getting the current influenza vaccination.

One of my family members had a good reason to delay getting a shot. We talked to his neurologist about a plan for him. Well, my goodness, his caregivers had the shot and they have been out sick all week. So now we have Plan B in mind for the family member who could not get the shot in Ocotober.

Some folks who may be more suseptible to pneumonia, a potential secondary complication, should discussion the need for a pnuemonia shot.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/whoshouldvax.htm

The CDC says that this year’s flu strains are expected to be mostly similar to last year’s, when the vaccine was 39% effective (a tad behind recent historical norms). The 2017 flu vaccine was created, to some extent, with such considerations in mind. Still, we won’t really know how effective this year’s shot is until the flu season has actually passed. http://fortune.com/2017/12/27/flu-vaccine-2017-effective-what-to-know/

Why am I,  No Non-cents Nanna, putting yet another post together about the flu? Because friends, family and neighbors ask, sort of.  Not Intended to be medical advice.

How many people in the US got the FLU last year?

The number of people exposed to or the number of people who will get sick with infuenza varies from year to year.

I know some people who never seem to get sick. If you are one of those healthy as a horse people  who can seem to stay on your feet every winter when every one else is moaning and groaning good for you. You must be doing somethings right.

Now, please allow me to grab you by the ear.

NOT one person on God’s green earth has a guarantee that they will not get particular strain of flu this year or next year.

Seasonal influenza may be thought of as a common nuisance, but the disease can be dangerous. Last flu season, 970,000 people were hospitalized because of the illness, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were 40 million cases.

There is a simple way to diminish the chance of getting the flu or suffering the worst complications from the disease: Get a flu shot http://abcnews.go.com/Health/flu-shots/story?id=42561290

Do I need to go the emergency room if I am only a little sick?

I hate to make a blanket statement then have someone come back to sue me for taking my advice when I do not intend to practice medicine without a lience on someone I have never even met *

*Snark ( Good advice for those mlm folks trying to sell a product. If you are looking for a natural remedy, it is illegal for product reps to being treating  diseases/ aliments if they are not licenced to do so. Make good choices to support your body’s immune system by appropritely eating and drinking densely nutritious foods and drinks for your body is a very good idea.)

Consult your doctor if a “sniffle” is life threatening to you. If not, you probably don’t need to be in the ER.

Read what the CDC says:

If you have the emergency warning signs of flu sickness, you should go to the emergency room. If you get sick with flu symptoms and are at high risk of flu complications or you are concerned about your illness, call your health care provider for advice. If you go to the emergency room and you are not sick with the flu, you may catch it from people who do have it.  http://www.khou.com/news/health/what-you-need-to-know-about-flu/506296197

What if you have baby in the house?

Babies under age 6 months are not given the flu shot. Yes, they can get very sick. Consult your doctor asa if the baby show unusual energy, alertness or vigourness in feeding…period… do not delay.

I was an old La Leche Leader and Lactation Consultant. I have no idea why people tell breatfeeding moms to stop breastfeeding when sick. In general to stop breastfeeding will complicate issues and I hae often seen mom get matiti from over engorged breasts because they did not feed nor pump for a few days. OUCH! Consult your doctor; not Facebook Not your neighbor’s grandma.

The following clickable link by Kelly Bonyata is so awesome and full of resource links that may cover more than you ever wanted to know aobut breastfeeding.

Should breastfeeding continue when mom is sick? By Kelly Bonyata, IBCLC
Don’t you just love to hold a baby? I know I do. So do plently of other loving people. Let me telll you flat out…babies are NOT a TOY!
New parents often struggle with family friends, neighobrs whm they have never met, ladies at the grocery store who want to breathe all over their sleepig baby. Don’t get me started on when my perfectly adorable chidlren were babies born in November, December and January…At the time, I had no idea that peopl eliked to spread germs all over babies. I had no idea what to say to these well meaning people..
Why not look through a bottom story window or photos. Isn’t Facebook god for posting pictures, too? SNARK!
I’m going to refer you to the clickabe link below if you are a new mom or someone who just has to see THAT baby next door and the exhausted parents politely decline.

Can I get ‘the flu” more than once?

Yes, you can get the flu more than once in the same season because there are different types. Even if you’ve had the flu, doctors recommend you get a flu shot to avoid other strains.

Flu Shot Facts & Side Effects (Updated for 2017-2018)

Editor’s note: This page will be updated as more information about the 2017-2018 flu season becomes available.

The seasonal flu shot is a yearly vaccine administered to protect against the flu, or influenza.

In the United States, flu shots are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The composition of the 2017-2018 flu shot will be slightly different from last season’s flu shot. Specifically, there will be a different strain of the H1N1 virus in this season’s flu shot, compared with last season’s shot. According to the CDC, the 2017-2018 trivalent flu shot will contain..Click the link to continue reading…

Not all Flu is Created Equal!

What Are the Different Types of Flu?

There are three types of flu viruses: A, B, and C. Type A and B cause the annual influenza epidemics that have up to 20% of the population sniffling, aching, coughing, and running high fevers. Type C also causes flu; however, type C flu symptoms are much less severe.

https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/advanced-reading-types-of-flu-viruses#1

Can my dog or my chickens get the flu?

YES, animals can get influenza. It is not a joke.

Clinical Signs of Influenza Infection in People and Pets

  • Nasal or ocular discharge…
  • Coughing
  • Increase respiratory effort…
  • Lethargy
  • … vomit, diarrhea, and decreased appetite

If your cat or dog shows clinical signs of a respiratory tract illness (cough, sneeze, nasal discharge, lethargy, etc.), schedule an examination with your veterinarian

Do you know where your chicken came from? Are you eating anmals that were sick?

Warning! The word ORGANIC, Open Range, Grass Fed… are irrelant as to whether or not a chicken, duck or turkey did not have the FLU! (That is another post I should do.)

Flu season is not just for humans: every year, multiple strains of avian influenza (aka bird flu) virus wreak havoc on birds and poultry (not to mention poultry farmers) across the globe.

Last year, highly pathogenic strains forced epidemiologists to euthanize hundreds of thousands of ducks, chickens, and turkey… Norway to Egypt to Japan, in an effort to prevent the viruses from spreading…. bird flu outbreaks in Bulgaria led to a cull of almost 8,000 ducks.

The greatest flu pandemic in human history—one that killed 50 million to 100 million people between 1918 and 1919—started out as bird flu.

https://www.consumerreports.org/flu/what-you-need-to-know-about-bird-flu/

Golly, gee whiz we never now for sure if the poultry we eat was sick o not.. There are meat inspectors in packing houses, but junk does get by them. To be on the safe side. COOK YOUR GOOSE well.

Why ‘Your Doctor Never Told You’ Defense:

Well, did you ask appropriate questions?

From my experience, too often, we don’t know enough about what we a dealing with to ask questions at the time.

Many times a docotor can give a pamphlet or the check out sheet gives you more information on your lab results or your medical condition. Printed material does cost the doctor money and storage space.

Something Your Doctor Will NEVER Tell You

No sane doctor will ever tell you to ask stranger on a closed Facebook group for medical advice..yet people do it every day!

STOP IT! Stop asking for medical advice on-line. But, please do your own research for credible surce rather than word of mouth..

If I read someone asking what or how to treat with a sick kid what I to is copy and paste a link for them to make their own decision with theri family doctr or their insurance phoene triage nurse.

WebMD.com is a resousrse I trust. But, then again, that link is not meant to be a substitue for face t face medical advice. It can help you to understand a lot of things you may not have known.

No Non-cents Nanna RANT!

Bodies are complicated matters:  Smart people decide take out student loans (they have to pay on for years and years ) so they can spend  years and years in medical school about how the body functions and how to treat injuries or illness when the body gets hurt. One on-line posts or even 3 or 4 Cool Pinterest images will not teach the lay person everything they need to know to asses every issues when they don’t feel well.

  • Every patient has a different knowlege then the next patient does.
  • No medical professional can read your mind as to what you know or do not know.
  • Doctors have to pay for office staff and the entire cost of doing business. There fore they have to see so many patients in a day in order to pay their bills. Besides the other patients expect to be seen at the time they were scheduled..you know.. get in and get out.. not wait for you.
  • I hope you get rid of the notion from sensationalized head line “Things Your Doctor Won’t tell you!” Titles like taht are marketing strategies to get you to open the page…so we all can earn money from the annoying pop-up ads. A websites costs the owner money to run.

Accurate FLU Facts are Credited to the Proper Sources

If I am standing in the grocery store check out all I have to do is say, “Hey, go to this No Non-cents Nanna website. The old nurse pulled together  lots of good information on the flu from reliable sources. Pick and choice what you want to get ideas on what to ask your doctor… then l leave the rest.”

Two reasons why No Non-cents Nanna includes clickable links to the FACTS:

For the record:

  1. I prefer to write my own words, but as my long time followers know…I am a terrrible typist. Of course I love to give my opinion, which I think is right…but…
  2. opinions have really become an on-line problem especially without siting the sources. That is why I do statements in quotes.

Then I do my best to help reader s to pull together those bits and peices of potentially misquoted facts so readers may be able to apply to their own situation with the guidance of their primary doctors.

Get the most out of an appointment with your doctor

  • Having your questions organized and written down to hand to your primary care doctor saves tons of time during a 15 minute appointment.
  • If your primary doctors are using a website portal system you may be able to ask questions an email.
  • Got 3 different health concerns? Don’t try to squeeze  45 minutes appointment out of a 15 minute time slot. Tell the fron desk scheduler in the doctor office that you have 3 concerns. Prioritize your concerns when you make the appointment. (Understand what the front desk receptionist can or can not do for you; there are limitations. part of the the doctor fee ou may complain about is waht helps to pay the receptionsts pay check. .)

What Do Front Desk Receptionists Do?

When you call the doctor office don’t try to be cheap and get free medical advice asking the person who ansers the phone ot tell you if you have the flu or not of if you should make an appointment. They can only do their job.

Why do doctors charge so much for an office visit?. There is a lot of expenses and people to pay when a doctorr runs a medical practice. yet few people ever think about it.

Do not as the gal who answers the doctors phone for medcial advice. Simply state your problem and make your appointment to see the doctor.

Don’t Thank the Comedian for the Rise in Childhood Diseases

Too many American parents believed a comedian’s unsubstatiated information about  immunizations thus they put America’s children at risk. Why did this woman get by with spreading  propaganda when we had preventable diseases under control?

Because of very pretty, very funny female comedian, who on New Years Eve had TV viewers kiss the TV, have exposed our kids are once again getting the measles, whooping cough and other preventable childhood diseases that are not so child like… I do not like to watch Jenny any more. I don’t trust her. Do you? Why?

I know how not so child-friendly those childhood disease are. I had most of those diseases except polio, diptheria and lock jaw in the 1950’s.. I have enough to know I want my grand kids to get their shots.  Be sure to read the content below under the part in red MUST READ.

While parents are afraid of immunizations they are no strangers to feeding their children drive-through crap and prepackaged toxins with fun shapes and colors.  Or parents are buying all ind of new fangled tech gadgets hyonotize young minds into zombies and promote carpal  tunnel. It doesn’t make sense to me… and that is my opinion…except the fact that all seem to be brain washed by marketing strategies and pretty smiling faces. Today success seems to be determined by how many entrtaining / labor saving devices we can own.

Not meant to be medical advice. Please consult with you health practictioner after having done good research on your own from scientifically prepared reports rather than actors who portray what someone pays them to say.

Americans fell for not factual propaganda

…that an actress, an actress mind you, that makes people laugh and men drool.. I mean really… how credible is a person who can successfully pretend to be characters they aren’t? That is my opinion and this is my blog so I can collect and share more credible sources to overwhelm, you the reader, with more information on immunizations that you may have thought about researching on your own…I do this without pin-able pictures.

I would love to think that there have not been, there is no and there will never be any side effects or problem with the immunizations we give our children… in reality nothing will be a perfect fix in this world… Do I trust big drug companies? HELP ME NO!

Do I know what side affects of  “childhood” diseases can do? Unfortunately, YES,  I DO KNOW what those nearly eradicated diseases can do. But, I fear the younger generation is so spoiled that very few have an inkling of what to expect.when these preventable diseases hit harder than they could ever imagine.

Parents in this day and age have no clue what misery they missed out on by being immunized. Nor do today’s parents bother to look in a book to read about it themselves. Too many parents, today seem to be so damn passive that they prefer to buy into entertainment rather than learning the documented facts.

We have the statistics to back up the horrors of childhood diseases.. We have the factual numbers to show most of the data from past generations. We can’t exactly predict the future, but we do know that history repeats itself if we have not learned from it.

Did you get a flu shot this year?

For example: So far this year and it is only January 22, 2018 it seems the flu is hitting America with a vengeance. So, it is too early to quote stats on the flu of 2018. What we do know is: the vaccines are not covering as well as hoped.

I think that those who are more physically fit with good nutritional habit will recover. Then hopefully they will disinfect those precious covered tech devices we can’t live out before we re-infect ourselves and those around us.

[I just had a crazy thought. They used to burn bedding and books after epidemics. Will the good folks of today be willing to burn their dispose of their cell phones and i pads should we discover they are transmitting diseases? What if? Recently grocery stores started offering disinfectant wipes for icky handles on grocery store carts. but then we go and around with germ y cell phones and think nothing of it…m-m-m? Just a thought…] author Malika Bourne

If folks take some preventive steps we can reduce the spreading of the flu. We can keep the  flu to a minimum rather than a Pandemic. We will have to wait and see…if people make good choices or not.

I fear that all too many who can not take the time to learn from our history are doomed to repeat the past…ignorance; lack of preventative hygiene; poor nutrition…Millennial, in particular are complacent. They have not experienced, yet, real gut wrenching pain of disease… and I they don’t have to learn the hard way they life can’t always be sugar coated rewards just by showing up to play the game.

You Don’t Know as Much About the Flu as You Think You Do

Just as we can prevent the spread of other communicable diseases that used to kill and cripple children. Adults can get those diseases as well,  but in the past most people were exposed to those diseases and children before they reached adult hood.

The very old statistics on Autism from way back in the olden days really have not been very good. On a personal note when I was in nurses training in the early 1970’s I learned a little bit about Autism. Nobody really knew that much about it. I learned enough to identify a few kids in my care to point out to the parents to mention to their child’s doctor. Up to that point  other knowledgeable people sloughed off the lack of eye contact or things rocking as the kids was hindering the class flow… but few knew that something to could be done to help.

What am I saying?

I am certain that Autism was under diagnosed until recently. I know for fact as a nurse who graduate din 1972 that autsim was often not recognized very early in life.

Let me take this point to the extreme..

Do we see cavemen drawings of TV, computers automobiles or autism?  of course not. I will guess a good portion of cavemen died from exposure to the elements, food poisoning if they did not starve to death or get eaten by a wild animal… Priorities were different I think…. I don’t know because I was not alive, just yet in Caveman days.I was born a few years later in the Happy Days.

Does the Bible have stats on Autism being caused by immunizations? No, but that does not mean that autism did not exist way back in ancient Biblical history. Most people died before they were 50 of other causes far more critical. If I dug deep into archaeology I would guess that we may find some documents evidence of autism, but did not have  diagnostic code yet. It was Survival of the Fittest  cruel concept dictated that who ever could fin for themselves lived or those who could not died. What facts were the most important priority to record?

What I  am saying in kind of stupid or crude sounding way that is probably more statistically accurate than any claim that any understandably emotional mother of an autistic child should be claiming on American news media. Don’t get me wrong, my heart goes out to parents who learn then live with children who are diagnosed with autism. The real life scenario is devastating.

Facts and Statistics on Autism

About 1 percent of the world population has autism spectrum disorder. (CDC, 2014)

Prevalence in the United States is estimated at 1 in 68 births. (CDC, 2014)

More than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. (Buescher et al., 2014)

Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability. (CDC, 2008)

http://www.autism-society.org/what-is/facts-and-statistics/

CDC Finds No Change In Autism Prevalence

For the first time in over a decade, new federal autism statistics suggest that prevalence of the developmental disorder is steady.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that 1 in 68 school-age kids across the country are estimated to have autism.

https://www.disabilityscoop.com/2016/03/31/cdc-no-change-autism-prevalence/22113/

Do immunization cause autism like Jenny Mc Carthy has claimed? this is not a laughing matter.

Gee, I don’t really know tho; I really do not think so. I have not seen good enough documentation to prove or disprove. But, from what I have read Jenny was wrong…really wrong…but don’t quote me. ( See a quote and link below.)

We can’t believe everything we hear or read. Hopefully we adults make our good choices based on facts not rumors and unsubstantiated claims.

It is also devastating to learn about then live with a promising child who suffers from preventable complications of measles, mumps, rubella, polio, pertussis etc. I do know that immunizations have saved lives..I do know that for a fact.that all too many celebrities who are desperate to save their careers have jumped on crusading bandwagons by being spokespersons for misleading propaganda. Then again, other celebs have done a great deal of good for humanity- it help get them publicity.

I also know, as a statistical fact that too many children whose parents listened to a comedian have lost children to a childhood disease or complications of.

The Anti-Vax Movement and the Dangers It Poses to the Community

These people claim that it is their freedom and their right to choose not to vaccinate themselves or their children, despite ample evidence that vaccines save lives.

When presented with scientific research arguing in favor of vaccines, anti-vaxxers claim that the research is not trustworthy because it is surely paid for Big Pharma, which is only looking to profit from the pain of others.

Since the study was published, however, it was subsequently debunked. Despite the fact that the study has been disproved, it is still fueling the anti-vaxxers….

Anti-vaxxers believe that the risks far outweigh the benefits. Science has shown us that the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks. Vaccines work.

Preventable Childhood Illness on the Rise

Top Five Childhood Diseases on the Rise

Vaccine Preventable Childhood Diseases

If you only read one part READ this:

If you read nothing else…

on my verbose post with far too many typos I hope you click the link coming up to just take look at what the bodies of sweet little children look like when they get 10 very preventable disease.

Go ahead click HERE.. warning picture are graphic.

Shocking Highlights of the 10 preventable diseases parents are choosing to not protect their kids from:..

Most of these diseases may start out like a little cold… but you will never ever want to to discover the little cold is something far more sinister than you know.

Must Read:

  1. VARICELLA (Chickenpox) It can lead to pneumonia, brain infection or death. To read more http://www.idph.state.il.us/public/hb/hbchikpx.htm
  2. TETANUS (Lockjaw)Tetanus  caused by a poison produced by a germ that can enter the body through a cut…painful spasms of all muscles and can lead to “locking” of the jaw so a person cannot open his or her mouth, swallow, breath or move…
  3. PERTUSSIS (Whooping cough)Pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough, is an extremely contagious disease that also may affect the brain ..serious for babies, who can get pneumonia, have seizures, become brain damaged, or even die.
  4. POLIOMYELITIS (Polio)Paralytic polio is a virus that strikes children and adults and can cripple and kill….
  5. MEASLES (Rubeola)The measles virus can be spread very easily….can cause pneumonia, brain damage, seizures or death.
  6. The mumps virus causes fever, headaches and swollen salivary glands under the jaw…. may develop a mild meningitis (inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord) and sometimes encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Mumps also can result in permanent hearing loss…
  7. The rubella virus… mild sickness  fever, swollen glands and a rash that last about three days… if a pregnant woman gets rubella, she can lose her baby, or the baby can be born blind, deaf, ‘mentally retarded’ or with heart defects or other serious problems.
  8. DIPHTHERIADiphtheria – (pdf) is an infectious disease … bacteria live in mouth, throat and nose of an infected person, easily passed to others through coughing and sneezing…hard to swallow. If not treated, or not treated in time, the bacteria may produce a powerful poison that can spread throughout the body causing serious complications such as heart failure or paralysis.
  9. HEPATITIS BHepatitis B is an infection of the liver  Hepatitis B causes a flu-like…infected pregnant woman can expose her newborn to this virus during birth….pregnant woman can expose her newborn to this virus during birth. … virus stays in liver… rest of their lives…. severe liver diseases or cancer.
  10. HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE TYPE B (HIB) INFECTIONSHaemophilus influenzae causes serious health problems in young children, including the most dangerous type of meningitis….pneumonia… infection  blood, joints, bone, throat and heart covering…

Not one of those potential complications are like a day at the park for any child…There is nothing child-like when a child gets  a preventable disease. it is not fair to not be willing to help our children with some kind  protective immunity that vaccines can offer. These diseases that were almost wiped out or under control are no respect-or of persons nor does a disease care what your income bracket is nor believe system.

Explore more consequences of preventable diseases:

Complications of Measles

For those who don’t trust the CDC just as the old timers like grand parents.I’m old. I have disabilities that I have lived with for years like hearing loss. Do I know that my diminished hearing was caused form the measles? I don’t know for sure.

Measles can be a serious in all age groups. However, children younger than 5 years of age and adults older than 20 years of age are more likely to suffer from measles complications.

  • Ear infections occur in about 1 out of every 10 children with measles and can result in permanent hearing loss.
  • … one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children. one child every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis (swelling of the brain) that can lead to convulsions and can leave the child deaf or with intellectual disability.
  • For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die from it.
  • Measles may cause pregnant woman to give birth prematurely, or have a low-birth-weight baby.

Click the link to read more in depth facts: https://www.cdc.gov/measles/about/complications.html

At some point a great number of those children who were not immunized whille get those diseases and feel the consequences like they never could have anticipated. Those  who will choose to work in the fields of education or health care will be required to be immunized before they can work.

Herd Immunity

When you choose to not vaccinate a child who is eligible for a vaccine, you are compromising herd immunity. Despite significant research proving the benefits of vaccines, more and more people are choosing not to vaccinate. As the ratio of un-vaccinated to vaccinated children changes, the reliability of herd immunity also changes.

….far too easy…. States are reporting higher and higher numbers of children who are not being vaccinated, and quite frankly, … alarming and it is reckless.

  • For every 1 million children who receive the vaccine for measles, 1-2 children experience complications

You Don’t Know as Much About the Flu as You Think You Do

You Don’t Know as Much About the Flu as You Think You Do.

What you don’t know about influenza can hurt you or your loved ones.

This post will not only give my snarky opinion but links to accurate facts you may not have thought of to become more educated with the facts versus what you heard or read on Facebook. Read my typo riddled posts and I can over load you with facts your never thought to ask about. Pick what your want and skip the rest… and for God’s sake if you are sick STAY HOME! if you and the kids are not feeling well.

No one wants what you have!

No one wants the germs you have. Wash your hands. No Non-cents Nanna

If you feel sick, don’t go to work. Keep ailing kids home from school, too.

An adult can infect other people one day before symptoms show up and up to 5 days after they start. You could spread flu to others before you know you’re sick. If you go back to work or school within 5 days after your symptoms started, chances you’re still contagious.   https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/flu-guide/spreading-flu-do-you-know-the-rules#1

Personal Message:

Since I was a kid I figured out that people would say they had ‘the flu” when they did not. It is a given that people who play hooky from school or work as just plain lying when they say the “had the flu.”

Altho’ I have one foot in the natural remedy door from decades of experiences and the other foot in established medicine I get so irritated with my “natural remedy friends” who make claims that they “beat the flu in 24 hours with an herb.”. I say BULL SHIT and all I have to know is their symptoms…they might NEVER ever had influenza. For example: norovirus resolves in a day or two. So, who knows?

( No Non-cents Nanna has a degree in nursing with years of RN experience teaching young parents how to care for their children.there are too many old wives tales out there practicing medicine that is not accurate.)

LINKS to RELIABLE FACTS

I gathered up relevant links from reliable sources so I don’t have  to argue with any one . I can simply say “Hey, Go look on my No Non-cents Nanna blog.” . I can then walk way with confidence that you don’t now as much as you think you do. My post is not to give medical advice just point out some common sense that you can Google until you can ask your own doctor.

Sometimes people eat something they should not have and get a belly ache and the runs. These symptoms alone are too often self diagnosed as “the flu” when it is not. So let us get the facts. Example E coli and Salmonella

Severe gastrointestinal symptoms may need the advice and treatment of a medical professional as well. That is why it is an excellent idea to see a primary care doctor or regular check up whether you get sick or not.

GI symptoms can leave anyone dehydrated and weak from electrolyte imbalance.

Definition of Influenza

…. influenza is a highly infectious respiratory disease…. caused by certain strains of the influenza virus.
… virus is inhaled… in the upper respiratory tract, causing typical flu symptoms such as fatiguefever and
chills,
hacking coughand body aches. …potentially life threatening secondary infections.
…stomach “flu” is commonly blamed for stomach upsets and diarrheathe influenza virus rarely causes
gastrointestinal symptoms…. likely due to other organisms such as rotavirus, Salmonella, Shigella, or Escherichia coliClick to read the entire definition https://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/The+flu

For those people who have not been around long enough to have experienced influenza during a PANDEMIC the real flu can be life threatening… Flu is not “nothing to sneeze at”.. Just because you never had the flu or were mildly sick does not mean you or your family won’t get deathly ill this winter.

On the bright side, you may not get sick at all.

What are the symptoms of flu?
The most common symptoms of flu are fever, cough, and sore throat. Symptoms can also include body
aches, headache, chills, runny nose and feeling very tired. Some people, especially young children, also
have diarrhea and vomiting. Symptoms last from a few days to up to a week or more.

1 in 1,000 cases of the FLU is FATAL

  • annual death toll attributable to influenza and its complications averages 20,000 in the United States.
  • 1918-1919 Spanish flu pandemic, the death 2040 million worldwide.Approximately 500,000 deaths in US
  • Pandemics also occurred in 1957 and 1968 with the Asian flu and Hong Kong flu, respectively.
  • The Asian flu was responsible for  70,000 deaths in the United States, while the Hong Kong flu

killed 34,000.

  • There are three types of influenza viruses, identified as A, B, and C.
  • United States, 90% of all deaths from influenza occur among persons older than 65

The problem is that people can be contagions up to 24 hours before they get sick. Of course if you don’t go to work you don’t get paid…., but not only do you need to time to recover you may still be contagious for more days than you will guess.

…and on top of it all most people do not wash there hands when they should. I’m not saying that you have to be a germaphobe. Remember to wash your hands after using the toilet and before you eat at the very least.

Victims of FLU may feel fine then abruptly get hit hard with upper respiratory symptoms; junky cough; chills, weakness, tired; high fever and body aches. If that is not harsh enough some folks may be secondary infections. The very young, the older  and people with sedentary life style or disabilities often do not have the reserves to fight it off as well as others who can care for themselves.

  • Dehydration
  • Pneumonia
  • Shock
  • Sepsis
  • Organ Failure

Did you know that places of business; grocery store; drug stores; schools, day cares and even medical facilities can shut down during an epidemic.

Flu is respiratory

Far worse than the common cold….

… high fever, intense chills,chest pains associated with breathing… productive cough with thick yellowish green sputum. …. medical treatment is necessary…. sinus or ear infections… Heart and lung problems, and other chronic disease can be aggravated.

Diagnosis

Most often doctors will rely on symptoms they have been trained to diagnose. If you think you have the flu and you are other wise healthy often times you don’t need to panic and drag your butt in the doc’s to breathe all over the other patients and staff. ( Influenza is transmitted by heavy respiratory droplets in the air.)

You DO want to seek immediate medical attention for more severe symptoms; see below.

There are some tests including test to rule out other secondary issues like STREP Throat. Since 1999 there has been the Rapid Strep Test., but that is not fool proof to say for sure you don’t have Strep.. A blood test takes a few days to culture to see what it grows. yes, it is possible to start getting over one illness only to get another communicable disease on top of it. So be sure to have your pantry over stocked with Gatorade. ( Not endorsing any brand name.)

If you are getting sick when you go to the grocery store…you will get everyone else in check out line including the cashier sick.. or may some sick person pushing the grocery cart got them sick and the cashier got you sick…a vicious cycle!.. and what if the ER staff was in the same check out line as you.. what if doctors and nurses drop like flies from the flu.Who will be the care-givers?

Getting Serious with the FLU

Know the signs and symptoms of DEHYDRATION

  • Lethargic: excessive drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

Dehydration is getting more serious when:

  • Sunken eyes
  • Reduced perspiration
  • Dry, shriveled skin
  • Increased heart rate
  • Fever
  • Unless your take your blood pressure you may not be aware when your blood pressure gets too low.

Try very hard to drink enough fluids to stay hydrated. But when drinking fails you or your child or grandpa they may need IV fluids. ( Read a bit further below about the shortage of IV fluids)

Fluid Replacement via IV

Intravenous fluids replace the fluid lost through sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, and frequent urination.

These fluids often contain potassium, glucose, and sodium, which are electrolytes your body needs to function normally.

….drinking sports drinks or sipping clear broths or plain water.

AVOID caffeinated beverages promote fluid excretion that lead for more dehydration.

Read the source quoted here for tips on staying hydrated in hopes of avoiding the need for an IV

What about the Rumor of IV Bag Shortage?

it is not a rumor…

You may remember Puerto Rico got hit hard by  a Hurricane  Maria a few months ago. If you think  their problem doesn’t affect you. THINK AGAIN… Trump should be eating his disrespectful words  and lack of empathy for Puerto Rico, in my opinion.

This is true. Hospitals in both Puerto Rico and the mainland United States have reportedshortagesof intravenous fluids and bags since Maria tore through the island — where several medical manufacturing plants are located — in September 2017.

Among the manufacturers affected was Baxter International, the largest IV bag supplier in the United States; the company says on its website that it ships more than a million units of IV solutions a day. The FDA responded by saying that Baxter and other companies to get priority access to the island territory’s electrical grid.

“It’s unprecedented to have this kind of large-scale, nationwide drug shortage of such a basic item in U.S. health care,” said Chief Pharmacist John Armitstead at Lee Health in Fort Myers, Fla. “So it’s quite dramatic.”

IV saline fluids in their ubiquitous plastic bags and tubes are a convenient way to deliver medication to a patient through an intravenous needle, allowing gravity to do the work and freeing nurses for other tasks. They are also used to hydrate patients.

How is Influenza Spread?

Now I tell you…The flu bug spreads a day before people even know they are going to be sick with the flu…then it hits ’em hard.

Tip: stock up your pantry on sick day necessities before you get sick. toilet paper; chicken broth; Gatorade;etc.

People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/spread.htm

Try to NOT Share the Flu

  • Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough
  • Wash your hands often under running water
  • Stay home when sick
  • Do NOT touch your face.
  • Avoid touching surfaces like counter tops…the influenza bug can live up to 2 hours on the teachers desk or the bank tellers counter… oh yeah…nothing is off-limits to an invisible  flu bug.

Ewww! I have to wash my hands, now…how about you? Feeling gross?
