Sound of Freedom: Conversation Starter on Child Abuse

Human trafficking is complex.

This post was inspired by Sounds of Freedom – on the horrors of Human Trafficking and sexual abuse of children.

We Americans must face the reality that selling human beings DOES exist and we must have some awkward or sensitive conservations about the facts. To know the exact number of victims is difficult due to underreporting for various reasons.

I want to warn you that social media is not the best support for coping with trauma. And I encourage everyone to seek professional support. Being victimized and or exploited is not your fault.

NoNon-centsNanna

NoNon-centsNanna.com

In this post, I want to focus on the fact that the movie’s promotional interviews, a number several years old, have been a tool that has started conversations. And then personal “secrets” have spilled out in the comment sections of video interviews with escaped/ rescued victims/ survivors of human trafficking. We MUST keep talking and asking questions – send the message that sexual abuse will NOT be tolerated in this country.

Please keep in mind that social media is not credible counseling that you need after trauma.

Social media like Tik Toc is not a reliable source of accurate information. Facebook is NOT “the internet”. Facebook pages are NOT “websites”. Google the facts from credible sources. I’ll be posting some resources for you further down in this No Non-cents Nanna blog post as examples of credible resources.

There are more than a few social media sources claiming that “human trafficking is at an all-time high”. The social media followers or nonprofessional content creators repeat the claims. But what do some people mean by “trafficking” in their minds? – I have no clue. I won’t simply assume as I am not a mind-reader. Therefore this post will break down “trafficking” less vaguely.

From what I have seen on Youtube videos and in the comments it appears that quite a few folks think that “trafficking is at an all-time high”.

On the flip side, I read 1 comment today that wrote, “Trafficking has been going on for 1,000s of years.” I knew that. I also know that enslaving and trafficking have been and remain “cultural”. I will not explore that in this post.

Keep in mind that this paragraph provides absolutely no documented evidence to prove or disprove a trending claim. – this is anecdotal- and what you run across on social media has everything to do with how a piece is tagged and collected by algorisms.

Telling a story about something you remember or heard is an anecdote – that is not scientific or legal proof of a fact. Telling a story with your interpretation may not be exactly what should be stated on the witness stand in court, either. (I’m not a lawyer or a judge.) Most of us who spin a good yarn tend to embellish and/or exaggerate to keep our audiences attention.

In my opinion, Tim Ballard, as he does interviews on Sound of Freedom, tends to embellish. He is a great storyteller. Then when you add critics into the mix, they pick apart somewhat exaggerated statements or the part where he might edit for brevity or to protect identities. As we move on the reader or the video viewer hears the justified criticism. Then we readers may decide what could be called a cognitive distortion that “everything Ballard claims is a lie.”

What a confusing mess!

I don’t want to waste time arguing about who is all right and who is all lying. I hope to educate my readers on the FACTS as collected by HotLines and then published by the governmental agencies of the United States.

Note: I have linked to some sources like Wikipedia and CNN that are not my favorite in an effort to bring a balance of ideas for you to compare and make your own decision rather than my bias taking over with me cherry-picking only from one viewpoint.

I have been tagged in comments under some biased Youtube videos asking me about what help there is for victims in the United States. I have picked up on resentment that the movie Sound of Freedom rescued foreign children – what about American children? Those questions addressed to me under someone else video lighted the proverbial fire under me to get this post on talking about all kinds of sexual abuse and exploitation moving along and getting it published.

I put together this post not because this is currently a hot topic and I want to ride the bandwagon. But because I am passionate about the subject and see far too many myths and triggering pieces of misinformation that can be dangerous triggers for some people. We all need real FACTS and professional resources to educate ourselves.

Keep reading this No Non-cents Nanna post for a surprising fact-check result to find out whether or not a trafficker is hiding behind every bus stop or not. Please check out other Fact Check sources as well. Sad but true, not all Fact Checks are created equal.

BTW No Non-cents Nanna is not a journalist but is a blogger who cites sources.

*Sound of Freedom: The Reality Behind the Movie

Sound of Freedom is based on the real-life events surrounding the remarkable work of Tim Ballard, although it’s important to note that the film takes certain creative liberties for storytelling purposes. Here are the key elements of Tim Ballard’s journey that the movie centers on:

Tim Ballard embarked on numerous rescue missions throughout his career, both while working for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and later with his organization, Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.). …

Promotional efforts for the July 4th movie Premiere of Sounds of Freedom have not only piqued interest by receiving 5-star reviews from moviegoers, like myself. Yes, I bought tickets for my son and myself. I also passed on a Pay-It-Forward Ticket for my sister who went with us.

But conventional news sources/ critics opened the floodgates of bad reviews, rumors, allegations, culture wars, and controversies.

Below is one example of the many criticized points. Also, check out the clickable links above to read a few of the negative points of view. Please keep in mind that the intent of this No Non-cents Nanna post is not to agree or disagree with any side of this Culture War.

Check out one of my discussion pages on a new social media site CultureWar.Cafe/STOPHumanTrafficking

Angel Studios, the film’s distributor, set up a controversial “pay it forward” scheme for Sound of Freedom. There’s a message at the end of the film and a prominent link on the studio’s website urging viewers to buy an extra ticket “for someone who would not otherwise be able to see the film”. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jul/23/sound-of-freedom-qanon-movie-conspiracy-theories

And of course, Q-anon conspiracies and the movie Cuties found their way into what I thought would be a thriller dramatically based on the passion of Tim Ballard. You, the reader of this post probably already knew all of the above. If you did not know I made your research a tad easier by including clickable links to related articles and YouTube videos.

I want you to know that I am not ignoring the lifelong trauma of being sexually abused by an uncle, family friend, or priest. Every one of you who says #METOO, I care. I really do. I do not forget about you. I do not intend to compare or minimize the trauma you survived. Molesting a child is a crime, but not the same crime as trafficking. This post will focus on trafficking.

TRIGGER WARNING!

What is Human Trafficking?

Not everyone agrees with the definition of Human Trafficking. Not everyone in the United States is even aware that Human Trafficking exists in America. However, there is a legal definition with I will share with you coming up.

Sex trafficking has commonly been regarded as a human rights crisis that receives an inadequate amount of attention.

However, recent news articles surrounding the arrest and conviction of musical artist R. Kelly have invoked national concern over the issue of sex trafficking rings.

The arrest of R. Kelly highlighted how minors and members of marginalized groups are disproportionally affected by the sex trafficking industry and that the issue cannot go ignored by media outlets and the public.

https://sites.uab.edu/humanrights/2021/12/13/the-current-state-of-sex-trafficking-and-celebrity-perpetrators/

Back in the 60s, an adult relative disappeared. Her family had not heard from her for weeks. It turned out that she simply moved in with friends and failed to make a “collect-call “or write a letter to tell her family what her address was. She was fine.

I don’t really know who it was who got excited and called the FBI to learn that no one in that agency was going to do anything to help find her. My mother finds out and gets all serious when Uncle Tom the guy who knew “everything there was to know in the world because he was a chiropractor”.

“Uncle Tom” told my mother about “white slavery” and “sex trafficking”. And then my mother starts throwing out all kinds of unfamiliar terms in front of my sisters and me. I was 16 and my sisters were only 12. We had no clue why she was frantic.

In my head, I visualized this adult relative riding around in the back of a semi-truck in heavy traffic to go pick cotton. I had no idea what “white slavery” or “trafficking” was. I am going to guess that even in 2023 there are still people who naively have visions in their heads of something different than the definitions, like I did.

The above part of my anecdote has a real kicker of an ending, which is the reason why I am telling an edited version. I only recently realized why “Uncle Tom” knew so much.

Until I graduated from nursing school I was not familiar with the word “pedophile”, either. “Uncle Tom” was a professional man who was also a “pedophile”. He got involved with posting inappropriate photos of children on his computer. At the time I also had no idea in the late 80s and early 90s how or why men liked to look at “kiddie porn” on a computer.

He got caught – big time- and was sent to prison for not long enough for the organized crime he was involved in and what could be legally proven.

Recently it occurred to me that this man knew so much about “white slavery” and “sex trafficking” because he knew firsthand.

My final point is this: most of us have had no reason to know what dirty secrets are going on right under our noses. But, with the rise in handheld tech device use pedophiles have easier access to our children than when they were “hanging out on a neighborhood playground”.

Most victims know and trust the preditors who violate them. Consider the definition of trafficking before you claim a molested neighborhood child was “trafficked”. We want to use the correct terms when warning others. We don’t want to over-exaggerate or play down any traumatic event that harms our kids.

If it is not obvious, I have spent decades educating myself on child sexual abuse and I still am by no means an expert. Please seek professional counseling for help with your own recovery. A blog post or an article may help support but not replace professional guidance for recovery from trauma.

ASPE.hhs.gov is a good resource to read.

The legal definition of human trafficking set forth in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) will be used. In the TVPA, Congress defines severe forms of trafficking in persons as:

  1. Sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age; or
  2. The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery (8 U.S.C. § 1101).

According to the U.S. Justice Department, you can read a more detailed legal definition and the codes about Human Trafficking.

It may surprise you that trafficking is not just about forced sexual abuse crimes.

  • Trafficking includes forced labor.
  • Victims do not necessarily have to be taken against their will across state lines or the country’s borders.

Sound of Freedom takes place in South America. The laws and culture are very different from the U. S. This blog post is only referencing laws in the United States of America. As I wrote at the beginning of this blog post, Human Trafficking is complex.

Keep in mind that minor children are not at the age of consent. Minors cannot consent or agree to having sex with an adult.

To help you understand the laws about minors not giving consent to having sex with an adult etc, I provided 4 resources. There are more sources than I post on this page. I encourage you to look those up as well.

Why? Because pedophiles will claim something absurd as “She/he was asking for it.”

Disclaimer: This post is not intended to be legal advice. I am not a lawyer. For all legal matters, it is best to consult with a licensed attorney, not a post found on the internet.

Note: I used Wikipedia as a lazy quick and easy copy-and-paste description and links to get you started if you want to delve deeper into what we know about America Pedophiles – shocking! Pedophiles in the UK are included. Note the career paths of these men.

Between 80% and 90% of all pedophiles are male.

Keep in mind that women can also be sexual predators as well. Their motivation is different from the males’ reason for molesting.

Online predators statistics show that 89% of these interactions take place on the internet in chat rooms and private messaging.

Anyone working with children in the US is required to have a background check. Most people looking for a part-time babysitter from a nice neighbor who offered to give you a chance to go out for dinner don’t bother to do a background check.

Here is the problem: a preditor has to get caught in order for sexual abuse to show up on a background check. They also have to get caught to be forced to be on the Sexual Abuse Registry.

What percentage of child molesters are caught?

Child molesters statistics show that they rarely get caught. There is no way of knowing what percentage of child molesters get convicted and imprisoned because of how seldom victims report these incidents.

According to the National Sex Offender Public Website, “It’s important to identify the signs of sexual abuse and abusive behaviors, so that abuse can be stopped as soon as possible — or before anyone is harmed. Warning signs are often seen in concerning behaviors of children, teens and adults. Being able to recognize these behaviors can help you respond appropriately.”

Has My Child Been Sexually Assaulted?

Those of us who have been parents for a long time or worked in a child care/ health care setting know that as children grow they can act up or react in immature ways. I wish it weren’t so, but there are religious schools of thought that children should behave perfectly to an adult’s expectations. When I grew up the manipulative saying was, “Children should be seen and not heard.”

Bluntly, growing up I fell apart and overreacted quite often. My parents did not know what to do with me. I finally “got it together on the outside” only because I did not want my peers to make fun of me or to realize the things I was ashamed of.” I stuffed “secrets” inside to avoid getting the “Hell beat out of me.”

What I revealed about myself above either will be relatable to you or it will not. As it turns out, I was never the only little girl ( boy) in the world who put on a happy face to save myself from more humiliation.

At my stage of life, I can forgive my parents for being so oblivious to why I had nightmares or fell apart around certain people to say the least. Until recently parents did not have access to signs and symptoms that children were being sexually abused. It gives me to know that my own mother had stuffed her “secrets” of sexual abuse inside as well. I can now understand why my mom flipped out herself about certain triggers her daughters were oblivious to.

Sign to Look for in Children and Teens

Please don’t jump to conclusions. Please don’t overreact and do NOT start interrogating your child if they exhibit any of the following signs. Most children want to please the adult. You never want to coach them in what to say – you will blow the case against the accused.

  • Let the professionals investigate.
  • Support your child with love as a parent.
  • Get yourself some professional support.
  • Do NOT confront the accused, EVER.

For a brief explanation of one reason why to not interrogate your child yourself besides that you NEVER want to make them feel shame is that you don’t want to mess up the day in court when an alleged predator is on trial. That is for another post on legal matters or your own research on legal matters.

Is Your Child Having Any of These Problems?

Any of these symptoms could be indicative of another problem to ask your pediatrician about. Keep in mind that your family’s private healthcare providers are Mandatory Reporters.

Be informed about what Mandatory Reporters are required by law to do. If they see the criteria to report a concern they are not judging you. They are required to help your child. Isn’t that what we want for our kids,- someone to advocate for the child?

By having medical evidence that you have been sexually abused it takes the burden off of you to do the medical and legal investigation to nail the perp. We all want that perp STOPPED before he can repeat this crime over and over again. The legal system has to have hard evidence to prosecute.

Everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Here are some signs to look for:

  • Nightmares or other sleep problems without an explanation
  • Seems distracted or distant at odd times
  • Sudden change in appetite (increase or decrease)
  • Sudden mood swings: rage, fear, insecurity or withdrawal
  • Leaves “clues” that are likely to provoke a discussion about sexual issues
  • New or unusual fear of certain people or places
  • Refusal to talk about a secret shared with an adult or older child
  • Writes, draws, plays or dreams of sexual or frightening images
  • Talks about a new older friend
  • Suddenly has money, toys, or other gifts without reason
  • Thinks of self or body as repulsive, dirty or bad
  • Exhibits new adult-like sexual behaviors, language and knowledge
  • Has physical signs of sexual abuse (these are more rare, but may include the following):
    • Pain, bleeding, discharge or other physical trauma to the genitals, anus or mouth
    • Vaginal infections (girls) or sexually transmitted diseases
    • Persistent or recurring pain during urination or bowel movements
    • Wetting or soiling accidents unrelated to toilet training
    • Trouble swallowing

Stop It Now! is a nonprofit organization committed to preventing child sexual abuse.

The law indicates who can consent to sex and who cannot.

The law recognizes that children are developmentally not able to make decisions about some things, including when to engage in sexual behaviors.

Laws vary by state,(link is external) but a common age of consent is 16.

Engaging in sexual behaviors with someone under the age of consent is illegal and will be treated as criminal sexual conduct.

A child’s permission does not equal legal consent

Even if a child or underage teen gives permission or acts willingly, this never implies consent. A child is never accountable.

A child’s permission or even request to play a sexual touching or watching game never excuses the adult or teen from taking full responsibility for the interaction.

It is always the adult’s responsibility to set boundaries with children and underage teens.

https://www.stopitnow.org/ohc-content/why-permission-from-a-child-or-underage-teen-doesnt-count

Sometimes people justify their sexual activity with children by saying the child “wanted” to or the child touched them first. They may misread a child’s affection as sexual.

How to Find the Laws and Codes on Human Trafficking?

The immediately following block quotes will get you started on learning more about the laws on human trafficking. I give only a short amount of information in the block quotes for those who need to skim this blog quickly.

Please, do NOT quote the law from No Non-cents Nanna blogs. Go directly to the sources. I provided clickable links. Of course, I always appreciate any time my reader’s social share or refer to my No Non-cents Nanna’s research efforts.

Human Trafficking is a crime involving the exploitation of a person for labor, services, or commercial sex.

The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its subsequent reauthorizations recognize and define two primary forms of human trafficking:

  • Sex trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age. (22 U.S.C. § 7102(11)(A)).
  • Forced labor is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery. (22 U.S.C. § 7102(11)(B)).

Additional legal definitions are contained in 18 U.S.C. Chapter 77 (criminal definitions) and 19 U.S.C. § 1307 (includes definition of “forced labor” for purposes of implementing the federal prohibition on importation of goods produced with forced labor).

https://www.justice.gov/humantrafficking

Human Trafficking is a worldwide epidemic.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense:

  • $99 billion per year is made from sex trafficking
  • 4.5 million people worldwide are victims of forced sexual exploitation
  • $51 billion per year is made from forced labor
  • 21 million people worldwide are victims of forced labor
  • 20% of human trafficking victims are children

The above is not talking about parents making their children do household chores and then enforcing consequences such as no allowance or being grounded for a week.

These human trafficking laws, tho’, may include a year-round church compound encouraging parental members to turn over their children to the group to be raised. Instead of public school hours and regular age-appropriate curriculum, the minor children are allegedly forced to work, unpaid, in the yard, the fields, or the sawmill without sunscreen, water, or safety equipment.

Most commonly and currently minor children crossing the Mexico-U.S. border are being found working in unsafe conditions in factories that violate OSHA standards in America.

Is Human Trafficking on the rise or not?

I confess that after watching so many videos and reading so many news articles I was convinced that Human Trafficking was on the rise.

But then, I thought about increases in population and improved data collection…my belief was wrong. In fact “we all” are making assumptions that any content creator has actually researched from legit sources when they claim they “know the truth”.

Check this out…

According to National Human Trafficking Hotline – OFFICE ON TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS

An Office of the Administration for Children & Families
  • A total of 2,198 persons were referred to U.S. Attorneys for human trafficking offenses in fiscal year 2020, a 62% increase from the 1,360 persons referred in 2011.
  • The number of persons prosecuted for human trafficking increased from 729 in 2011 to 1,343 in 2020, an 84% increase.
  • The number of persons convicted of a federal human trafficking offense increased from 2011 (464 persons) to 2019 (837 persons), before falling in 2020 (658 persons).
  • Of the 1,169 defendants charged in U.S. district court with human trafficking offenses in fiscal year 2020—
    • 92% were male
    • 63% were white
    • 18% were black
    • 17% were Hispanic
    • 95% were U.S. citizens
    • 66% had no prior convictions.
  • At yearend 2020, for the 47 states that reported data, 1,564 persons were in the custody of a state prison serving a sentence for a human trafficking offense.

We are focused where we think we can make the most change:

Twenty years ago there was no data on trafficking. Labor Trafficking was not recognized.

Research & Data

Polaris serves as a data hub for the anti-human trafficking field, providing key data to hundreds of researchers, academics, law enforcement officers and others seeking to deepen knowledge and understanding.

Polaris’s data set, gleaned from the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline, also served as the underlying basis for a report on human trafficking of domestic workers – a significant percentage of labor trafficking survivors in the data set, as well as for the annual release of carefully analyzed data from the Hotline that reveals number of likely reported cases of trafficking each year.

Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit.

In some cases, traffickers trick, defraud or physically force victims into selling sex. In others, victims are lied to, assaulted, threatened or manipulated into working under inhumane, illegal or otherwise unacceptable conditions.

It is a multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world.

Who May be Trained to Identify a Child Who Is Trafficked?

If you have been sexually assaulted or you suspect that anyone, male, female, adult, or child has been sexually assaulted, it is vitally important to have a medical exam as soon as possible. Do not bathe. (I know that cleaning up is the first thing you really feel the urgent need to do- but don’t wash away evidence.)

I understand that the exam may make a victim feel “victimized” over again. I’m sorry. This is the only way, that evidence can be collected in order to stop the predator from sticking again and convicting that criminal. ***

T/E = exploitation and trafficking.

…health care providers can offer evidence-based medical screening, treatment, and holistic services to individuals who have experienced T/E and assist vulnerable patients and families in recognizing signs of T/E.

Providers and all of their staff need to adopt a trauma-informed, rights-based, culturally responsive approach to care of patients suspected of experiencing T/E, although these skills are relevant to care of any patient who may have experienced significant trauma.

OK, so healthcare providers can be trained to identify exploited minors who seek medical care after a work-related injury.

  • Won’t that solve the problems of Trafficking?
  • Who is going to pay for the medical supplies to treat an orphan immigrant child without insurance?
  • What are trafficked minors doing to get injuries that need medical treatment and why?

Creating a trauma-informed workspace and providing care to patients who have experienced T/E and other major traumatic experiences is, admittedly, time-consuming and poorly reimbursed by payers.

Labor Trafficking

Illegal Labor Trafficking

  • Exploiting girls or boys for commercial sex is one type of human trafficking.
  • Exploiting labor is another kind of trafficking.
  • It may be that some children or adults are exploited for both.

Below are examples of illegal child labor taking place in the United States. Does that surprise you that “slave labor” could be occurring in the U.S.? Let’s take a closer look.

We do know that children work in unsafe factories in China and third-world countries. American are more than happy to buy “affordable” products made by “slave labor” and don’t give it a thought. But we should. And that is another post to research.

Sound of Freedom Does Not Address Trafficking in the U. S.

I confess to resting in the summer heat with my feet up watching videos that relate to Human Tacking. And I have read 100s of comments by people who use handles other than their real names. I will summarize a common question: Why are organizations going to other countries to rescue trafficking victims rather than focusing on American-exploited and missing children?

I picked up that a number of people’s feathers are ruffled with talk of the Sound of Freedom story taking place south of the border while America’s problem with trafficking seems to be left out. Being long-winded and passionate about the safety of all children I jump in to say that Sound of Freedom is a conversation starter. I encourage everyone to keep talking about abuse and exploitation.

  • Every now and then someone will call me out. “What have you done to try to stop sexual abuse of children?” I’m glad they ask even though I sense an “attitude of antagonism” that I blowing hot air. Others, I sense feel overwhelmed.
  • Part of my answer is that I research and write blogs on family safety that include being part of exposing a religious cult that exploited child labor and sexual abuse. I have also been a witness in court as well as filed my concerns to Child Protective Services.

(I am not a hero – I’m just doing my job the best I can to protect children. I am certainly not a journalist – only a mediocre blogger. I don’t work for a governmental agency – but I sure can make phone calls, write emails, and sign worthy petitions.)

Why Talk About Trafficking, Exploitation, and Sexual Abuse?

The following is a list of ideas off the top of my head.

  • There is no need to give TMI violating your right to privacy or garner sympathy. Keep reasonable boundaries.
  • Predators will hear you talking about sexual abuse as a crime. they will get the idea that you are savvy and they will be caught.
  • You and I will all be better informed about the tricks pedophiles play on unsuspecting victims.
  • Parents and guardians will be more alert to red flags.
  • Lawmakers and law enforcers will be pushed to act quickly and be more responsive.
  • Build your own confidence to be proactively aware in your immediate community to Stop Trafficking.
  • Be able to clarify what other people who are talking about “trafficking” actually mean. Their definition may not be the same thing as a legal definition means.

Labor Trafficking: Forced Labor

Before you read the quoted clips (fair use commons credited quotes) and hopefully click and read the full article I want to point out something that you folks from farm country might be thinking…I am from the farm country of the Mid West. The old folks used to say that “hard work ain’t never hurt nobody.”

In fact, farm kids worked their tails off doing chores before and after school and especially during harvest time. That is what folks had to do to survive. Most, I assume developed “good work ethics”. People my late grandparents’ age, born in the late 1800s, would find it difficult to comprehend why kids shouldn’t be doing factory work.

  • There were no Child Labors Laws when they were young.
  • OSHA did not exist in the early 1900s either.

But, in some areas of the US, the same mindset remains with their descendants about hard work.

  • “Slave labor” currently in the U. S. is inconceivable – it is far from their everyday thinking – it does not compute.

Why would coerced labor be at the forefront of our American heads when most of us are just trying to navigate the New Normal and rising prices of essential groceries?

  • Forced Labor seems to only be a concept for some 3rd world countries – “That doesn’t affect us, here is the good ole US of A. The simple solution is to BUY AMERICAN!” some might say.

But, the truth is that with what seems like a revolving door of immigrants crossing the southern border …

  • …opportunists are taking advantage of unaccompanied minors right here in our US factories.
  • Immigrant minors have to have a way to survive and that makes them vulnerable to being exploited by heartless traffickers.

Minors who don’t speak English are being forced to either cheap/ disposable labor for processed foods we eat or for the sexual exploitation of pedophiles. These children have no work permits. They are not in school. They may only have shelter with overcrowded unsafe living conditions.

Don’t take my word for it. I’m going to help you out with a few short quotes and links that I easily found on the search engine, tonight. There are plenty more resources out there.

How Many Migrant Minors Are Working Full Time?

Health and Human Services and the Biden administration largely has said that they had no idea so many of these children were ending up working full time in dangerous jobs.

One of the real problems here is that there is not a support system for these children.

So it’s not like the foster care system where there’s a social worker who’s going to be checking up on these kids or sort of some support in place if things go wrong.

With these migrant children, they get released from a shelter to a sponsor and then there’s sort of nothing else. There’s no follow-up.

https://www.npr.org/2023/05/04/1173697113/immigrant-child-labor-crisis

But, wait! Have you heard states are easing child labor laws?

Meanwhile, Washington Post business reporter Jacob Bogage says a Florida-based conservative think tank called the Foundation for Government Accountability and its lobbying group, the Opportunity Solutions Project, are spearheading an effort to relax child labor laws across the country.

…the Iowa Senate passed a bill allowing minors as young as 14 to work night shifts, and states like Missouri and Ohio are considering bills that would allow teenagers to work longer hours in jobs that were previously deemed too dangerous.

“In Iowa right now, we have this bill advancing that would roll back vast portions of the state’s child labor protections,” Bogage says.

Can’t Companies be Fined for Letting Children Work Dangerous Jobs?

You’d think that a big fine would be a deterrent to being sure no children were cleaning up slaughterhouses at 2 AM.

There are ways to get around laws and safety standards and still cut business expenses.

“Golly, I did not know kids were working overnight.”

Sound of Freedom did not address this kind of Child Abuse that currently exists in America. Yet, many people are talking about forced labor in dangerous work conditions and voicing concerns.

But, that does not mean they wanted to ignore it. My guess is that the filmmakers made the decision to focus and what would be the most heart-jolting storyline. I cannot fault them for focusing. (If you look at my very long No Non-cents Nanna blogs I don’t seem to ever be able to tighten my focus. I find too many subsections to go off on tangents about.)

..employers told me again and again is that they are struggling to find people to do this grueling work.

  • Nobody wants to take the night shift.
  • Nobody wants to work on the cleaning crew at the slaughterhouse.

And so companies are turning to staffing agencies to try to fill these shifts — and the…

  • staffing agencies are then bringing in children.

child labor is almost never a criminal offense.

It’s a civil issue, and the maximum fine is $15,000.

So when we’re talking about a company like Pepsi or Wal-Mart, they’re going to make that back in a matter of minutes, maybe seconds.

State Child-labor laws conflict with the Federal Law

Cold-hearted greedy traffickers are ready and willing to take advantage of the loopholes between state and federal laws.

… federal law, the Fair Labor Standards Act… passed in 1938 …— that codifies a basic floor of protections for children in the workplace.

It says how many hours children can work and says in what environments they can work, what jobs they can do.

Here is an example:

Slaughterhouse cleaning company hired minors who worked in two Arkansas factories, Labor Department says

by Serenah McKay | February 21, 2023

Packers Sanitation Services Inc. was ordered to pay more than $1.5 million in penalties after a Labor Department investigation found the company had employed children from ages 13 to 17 to do hazardous work at 13 meatpacking plants in eight states.

  • None of the plants themselves were fined or charged.
  • Tyson Foods Inc.’s operations in Green Forest,
  • Tyson’s Goodlettsville plant,
  • Cargill Inc. plant in Dodge City, Kan
  • Packers Sanitation Services employed at least 102 children.

A Tyson spokesman in November told The Associated Press that the company was aware of the allegations against Packers Sanitation Services and was cooperating with investigators. The spokesman said Tyson expects its suppliers to follow the same labor laws it does to make sure minors aren’t hired.

On laws prohibiting state governments from requiring a minor to obtain a work permit

…investigate reports of minors working at chicken processing plants… multiple chicken processing plants in Arkansas have been cited for illegally employing minors.

The first thing I do is I show up at the state unemployment office and I say, give me all of the working papers, all of the permits for the minors that are employed in your state, because I want to look at those to see if they’re accurate.

…The Arkansas legislation and the legislation in Missouri and Georgia and Iowa would eliminate that paper trail…

Can you see a problem with eased Child Labor restrictions in these states? How easy would it be to grab migrant minors, promise them a job and a roof over their heads then take their paychecks…and no law seems to protect these undocumented children?

I have a question for you to ponder – this is NOT a suggestion.

What if these children were chipped? Would that be moral or ethical with a promise to protect kids in a country?

That is a quick example of LaborTrafficking of Minors.

Rolling Stone writes about concerns about how Sounds of Freedom depicts Human Trafficking. I think a block quote is worth sharing.

If I understand the statement in Rolling Stone correctly, the concern is about movie-goings not licking their idea of ‘trafficking” to solely one method. I already pulled together a little information about Child Labor above.

I don’t know about you, but I can accept that concern as valid.

And that is why this No Non-cents Nanna blog goal is to present a variety of viewpoints to get you talking about the subject in a more informed way after you read and close this page.

Albright says Sound of Freedom is “grounded in this sensational perspective of what child trafficking would be,” rather than reflecting its grim reality.

A representative for Angel Studios, which distributed Sound of Freedom, did not respond to a request for comment about questions regarding its accuracy; however, in a blog *post on its website, it acknowledges altering some of Ballard’s biographical details and that the film “took creative liberties in depicting the different methods of child trafficking.” https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/sound-of-freedom-child-trafficking-experts-1234786352/

Another controversial point is technology to find missing and exploited children.

I openly admit that chipping children is a fear that was not on my mind when I thought of technology. However, after reading 100s of comments, so far under YouTube videos a number of concerned people made what seemed to be frantic comments that “‘They’ want to chip our children – am opposed”.

I’m not making light of these fears. I simply don’t know who the ‘they’ is exactly that is often anonymously referred to online.

My idea of using technology to find kidnaped kids has been in a completely different direction. My passion is to focus on family safety tips, prevention, and self-help skills. Hence, I need to give this idea of chipping some more serious thought.

One thing I do know about is an ineffective program of fingerprinting kids. I’ll explore that later.

The White House Has a Plan

The National Action Plan retains a central focus on the foundational pillars of U.S. and global anti-trafficking efforts – prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnerships:

PREVENTION: Strategic prevention programs are wide-ranging, from educating vulnerable populations and mitigating risk factors to seeking to prevent goods produced with forced labor from entering U.S. markets.

  • Enhance education and outreach efforts, including for at-risk populations.
  • Enhance community-coordinated responses to human trafficking.
  • Strengthen efforts to identify, prevent, and address human trafficking in global supply chains.
  • Build capacity to prevent the importation of goods produced with forced labor.
  • Address aspects of nonimmigrant visa programs that may facilitate the exploitation of visa applicants and visa holders.

What Communities Are More At Risk for Exploitation?

  1. There is no single profile for trafficking victims. Trafficking occurs to adults and minors in rural, suburban, or urban communities across the country. Victims of human trafficking have diverse socio-economic backgrounds, varied levels of education, and may or may not be documented.

  2. Sex trafficking is a type of human trafficking and is a form of modern-day slavery.

It is a serious public health problem that negatively affects the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

RED FLAG Tech HABIT

In the U.S. who is not aware of the fact that we Americans have our faces in a cell phone a high percentage of any given day? This makes anyone vulnerable to a host of unplanned events.

But, children with access to unsupervised technology are even more vulnerable to being the target of a predator…

…more below to talk about…

Lincoln Laboratory connects counter–human trafficking community in pursuit of technology to help investigate cases.
Publication Date: May 6, 2021

“Traffickers are using technology to gain efficiencies of scale, from online commercial sex marketplaces to complex internet-driven money laundering, and we must also leverage technology to counter them,” says Matthew Daggett, who is leading this research at the laboratory.

In July, Daggett testified at a congressional hearing about many of the current technology gaps and made several policy recommendations on the role of technology countering trafficking.

“Taking advantage of digital evidence can be overwhelming for investigators. There’s not a lot of technology out there to pull it all together, and while there are pockets of tech activity, we see a lot of duplication of effort because this work is siloed across the community,” he adds.

Did the Pandemic and Tech Play a Role in Trafficking?

It seems the lockdowns and home-bound quests to escape boredom did play a role in increasing vulnerability to be groomed online by predators.

Did the pandemic increase trafficking dramatically? Maybe. Maybe not. I think we all need a tad more time for the factual stats to be published.

Meanwhile, check out the article quoted below for more insights, from the University of Alabama Birmingham.

The Current State of Sex Trafficking and Celebrity Perpetrators

… Covid-19 pandemic may have slightly paused our lives; however, the pandemic did not pause trafficking crimes as many law enforcement officials had hoped.

Instead, traffickers have used the effects of the pandemic to their advantage.

As many people are experiencing higher levels of economic and social vulnerability, there is consequentially a growing number of individuals put at a higher risk of becoming victims of trafficking.

According to the U.S. Department of State, “COVID-19 mitigation efforts, such as stay-at-home orders and travel limitations, increased rates of gender-based violence and substance abuse, both of which put individuals at a higher risk of human traffickers exploiting them.”

The administration also called out several U.S. allies and friends, including Israel, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Turkey, for backsliding in their efforts.

The designations came in the State Department’s annual “Trafficking in Persons” report, which cited the coronavirus pandemic as a cause for a surge in human slavery between 2020 and 2021.

The report covering 188 nations and territories said the outbreak had put millions more people at risk for exploitation and distracted some governments from efforts to stem human trafficking.

According to sources I have posted in block quotes there are certain communities that have greater risk factors than other communities. However, just because you and your children do not have any of those risk factors does not mean you are risk-free.

My intention is not to make you paranoid enough to fear a pedophile is lurking behind every tree.

I want to enjoy life. I hope that if I can help alert you to risk factors you will be able to put yourself or your children in a less vulnerable position. “close the barn door before the horse gets out” is an old-fashioned way of reminding us to practice prevention.

The following list of High-Risk Factors for Human Trafficking comes from: the Houston Foundation

Has Hollywood Played a Role in Sexual Abuse?

I have been to Hollywood – I hated how filthy and disgusting it was. In my opinion, I did not understand the appeal to migrate there in hopes of being discovered.

When I was young I worked in a mall where many actors and actresses shopped. They were normal people doing what they needed to do to buy shoes or school uniforms for their kids.

My late ex at one time, thought he could get our children into acting. So he answered an ad from a child’s acting agency. Needless to say a hypervigilant mother and a husband who wanted an easy job and I did not agree.

My son, to this day, feels that place was a pedophile scam. At the time, the agent and his photographer did not seem to appreciate that I would never step away from my children. They said to my husband, “You leave Mom at home to rest next time you bring the cute kids in.” And then they added, “I’ll call Johnny Carson to get you an audition with the band as a trumpet player for free.”

Can you see from my anecdote that the agent was love-bombing my late ex-husband?

Well, my firm “No thank you” ruined his chance at a Hollywood audition and chance to be our children’s ‘handler’.

My side story proves nothing. but, it is something that parents who want to get their children into acting have historically put their children in danger. I won’t expound on this in this post.

Below is a LA Times expose’. Take it or leave it.

Don’t get scammed: How to set yourself up for success and avoid predators in Hollywood

In February 2017, an undercover investigation shook the Los Angeles acting community. Criminal charges were filed against 28 defendants linked to five casting workshops over alleged pay-to-play schemes.

A yearlong effort by the Los Angeles city attorney’s office found that these workshops had violated the Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act when they charged aspiring actors to participate in auditions. Among those charged were several well-known casting professionals with credits in shows on Netflix, ABC and CBS.

The following is an example of a claim that was viral on social media claim that was proven to be false in June 2020. You cannot believe every rumor out of Hollywood, yet, many of us can not quite un-hear it either.

The claim that Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities and politicians are under house arrest for child sex trafficking is rated FALSE because it is not supported by our research.

My son and I happen to know a few actors/ actresses in low-budget Hollywood movies. One woman told my son that she knows Harvey Weinstein and he never even made inappropriate comments let alone touched her.

Again, my above anecdote proves nothing.

And it can be that way – someone makes allegations – someone else thinks a professional man is a perfect gentleman. By law, a person accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty. A true predator will seem to have far more rights than a true victim. Sadly, victims of sexual abuse up to recently are too often not believed. The alleged predator may have more people coming to his defense than witnesses of the actual crime come forth.

But the #MeToo movement stimulated change in America, far beyond Hollywood.

After the Weinstein accusations came to light, some of the most prominent actors and actresses in the business basically said, “Uh, yeah, everyone pretty much knew about this.”

One side of the industry that the film brings up is the subject of abuse against child actors. However, this isn’t the first time that attention was brought to this darker corner of Hollywood.

During the 2017 Me Too movement, we witnessed an alarming number of victims share their own experiences about the rampant predatory behavior in Hollywood. …
