What Can Families Who are Staying Home Do Without Hand Sanitizer?

No Non-cents Nanna has been preaching about teaching children good handwashing since I started this blog. The BEST thing to do is to lather up with soap and water scrubbing vigorously under warm running water for a good 20 seconds. Keep reading and scrolling for updates on current recommendations for self-care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, be careful not to rub all the skin off. Consider adding a hand moisturizer.

Does everyone need a hand sanitizer?

No, not necessarily. -The fact is :

Washing our hands in the sink with soap and water is proven to far better than Hand Sanitizer- which can give a false sense of security.

  • We MUST ALL wash our hands well and sanitize all surfaces.

The preferred and most effective of hand cleansing is to use soap and warm running water scrubbing vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds.

If you are not using hand sanitizer correctly you may be simply smearing around junk on your hands with a false sense of security. If you wash you hand well scrubbing vigorously under warm running water- when you should, the germs go down the drain rather than getting spread around. hand sanitizer does NOT kill every bug. See below.

Keep reading for information you can use on basic germ spreading prevention and infection control for your family.

Many traditions of American life are changing daily, with the nation’s most iconic retailers – including Walmart, Target, Costco and Home Depot – invoking new rules about how many people can be allowed inside stores. Some won’t allow kids. Others require face masks.

When are the best times to go? Should I wipe down groceries? Here’s some safety advice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Businesses remain closed as the coronavirus spreads and more states issue stay-at-home orders in which residents are ordered to shelter in place except in limited circumstances.

One of those exceptions is going to the grocery store. Many supermarkets have implemented new store hours to cater to the most vulnerable and have taken extra precautions to reduce the risk of transmission.

(update 3/19/2020)

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic changed … the world.

People are washing their hands, cleaning their smartphones and keyboards, realizing just how much they touch their faces…

… we touch a lot of stuff going about our day-to-day lives, and if coronavirus can indeed remain active in the air for hours, and on surfaces for days, we should be wiping and disinfecting things we touch more.

Here’s a list … not comprehensive list…things that other might touch… eat and drink with.

  • Door handles (the worst, by far)
  • Desktop
  • Other peripherals
  • Charging cables
  • Mugs (and cutlery)
  • Pens (good reason to stop chewing them)
  • Glasses (prescription and sun)

Self-Care

Now that we have learned to wash our hands…Let’s work on our relationships.

I apologize, this blog post needs re-organizing with so many updates. it is work in progress as we move forward.

Have you ever heard the “Joke”, Question: “What is a ‘normal family?’ The answer, “One that has not been diagnosed, yet.”

With the “new normal” the only therapy we will be getting is “virtual therapy”. However, we CAN start exploring new habits and new ways of relating to one another. We ALL have time on our hands, anyway, right?

Social-Distancing

The New normal is now social-distancing. For those families who have school age children you have now become their Stay-Home-From-School Home-school teacher.

Here is another No Non-cents Nanna blog that may overwhelm you with resoruces. it is a work in progress. I add and update often.

I have also gleaned from credible sources ideas for all of us to calmly cope with grace and confidence during this phase to control the outbreak of this new virus.

What good habits can we establish in our family that will last a lifetime, anyway that we can learn during this time of anxiety?

Have you seen the viral post about gargeling with vinegar or salt water? Did you get excited and shared it with everyone?

Well, it is BOGUS!

Do NOT share the graphic the quote below talks about.

A graphic has been shared thousands of times on Facebook which claims that gargling warm water with salt or vinegar can eliminate the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

The claim is false; international health authorities and experts do not list gargling as an effective remedy or prevention method for COVID-19.

The claim was published in this Facebook post on March 14, 2020.

Note: No Non-cents Nanna did not share this post. The clickable “this” in the quote will show you who psoted it on Facebook it is permantely recorded.

The post features a graphic image and texts that reads: “Corona virus before it reaches the lungs it remains in the throat for four days and at this time the person begins to cough and have throat pains.

If he drinks water a lot and gargling with warm water & salt or vinegar eliminates the virus. Spread this information because you can save someone with this information.”

I advise you to not share ANY posts or TWEETS that offer some kind of treament or preventative. It is not our job are regular people to prescribe or that anyone ever.

OK, if you are a mom, please do offer chicken soup or tell your kids to gargle and brush their teeth kind of thing. ue good judgment with supportive measure slike your mama used.

Like”if you friends were all planning on jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge” do not do it. Just because a post is viral does no mean it is true and safe.

The first and most valuable thing I learned in nurses’ training was this: the body’s first line of defense against infection is intact skin and mucous membrane.

  • There is no need to panic about not having hand sanitizer in the house when the kids are safely tucked in your home with running water and a bar of hand soap. Consider using moisturizing to prevent drying out your skin.
  • Focus on Self-Care rather than Health Scare.
  • Teach children to deal with natural anxiety by giving healthy facts. Focus on what you CAN do such as good hand washing.
  • Sit down with your family to discuss, “What can you control?” I’ll have suggestions below to get your family discussion started.
  • Make handwashing a healthy habit at home, school, and at play! What better time to grow healthy habits.
  • Sanitizing the home should be a priority on a regular basis. We CAN start a few new healthy habits.

Coping With Anxiety

Are we overwhelmed, yet, with routines turns up -sdie down; where we can and can not go; when to wash our hands and can we find toilet paper on the shelvves?

Unrolling the last roll of toielt paper in the house is enough to give me anxiety. having ample TP is at the top of my gratitude list. And yours?

9 Resources for Coping with Coronavirus Anxiety

You really don’t need to check the CDC’s website again. You probably do need a break, though.

It’s OK if you’re feeling anxious

…There’s nothing wrong with you for feeling anxious right now.

Ignoring the stress or judging yourself for feeling it is tempting, but it probably won’t help in the end.

Acknowledging your feelings — even if they’re scary — can help you cope in a healthy way.

…You’re not the only one who’s freaking out. The news is legitimately frightening, and fear is a normal, natural response.

Example:

2. Take a virtual hike through a national park

Hand Washing with Soap and Water is CHEAP and Effective

Help your child develop handwashing skills

  • Parents and caretakers play an important role in teaching children to wash their hands.
  • Handwashing …start teaching it at an early age.
  • Teach kids the five easy steps for handwashing—wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry
  • key times to wash hands, such as after using the bathroom or before eating.
  • …make it fun:… handwashing song or turning it into a game.

Give frequent reminders

  • Building handwashing skills takes time.
  • Using the bathroom, before eating, after touching pets, after playing outside, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose.
  • …handwashing becomes a habit

Lead by example by washing your hands

  • Young children learn by imitating the behaviors of adults
  • setting an example for your children to follow.

  • ...educate your self /family on when, how and why-wash out hands on a regular basis not only in a health crisis.
  • If you are reading this No Non-cents Nanna blog I tagged it well enough for you to find in a google search. I hope you will find this post to be a positively calming, quick and easy way to get healthy facts and practical ways for your family’s needs every day and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

My point is that there will be so many bloggers, entrepreneurs, price gougers vying for your attention. Sure, I want you to read my blog and social share.

  • Not all information that you read or hear online or in the gossip corner will be accurate in your family’s best interest.
  • No Non-cents Nanna chose to share short quotes and link all in one place to the CDC website for the most accurate information that will be consistent with current recommendations to get your family’s self-care discussion started.

The CDC Recommends…

When should I use?

www.cdc.gov/handwashing/pdf/handsanitizer-fact…
Cleaning hands at key times with soap and
water or hand sanitizer is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to those around you.
  • There are important differences between washing hands with soap and water
and cleaning them with hand sanitizer.
For example, alcohol-based hand sanitizers don’t kill ALL types of germs, such as a stomach bug called norovirus,
some parasites, and Clostridium difficile, which causes severe diarrhea.
  • Hand sanitizers also may not remove harmful chemicals, such as pesticides and
    heavy metals like lead.
  • Handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs, pesticides, and metals on hands.
  • Knowing when to clean your hands and which
method to use will give you the best chance of preventing sickness.

VERSUS

Healthcare facilities should:

  • Require healthcare personnel to perform hand hygiene in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations
  • Ensure that healthcare personnel perform hand hygiene with soap and water when hands are visibly soiled
  • Ensure that supplies necessary for adherence to hand hygiene are readily accessible in all areas where patient care is being delivered

Unless hands are visibly soiled, an alcohol-based hand rub is preferred over soap and water in most clinical situations due to evidence of better compliance compared to soap and water. Hand rubs are generally less irritating to hands and, in the absence of a sink, are an effective method of cleaning hands. https://www.cdc.gov/handhygiene/providers/guideline.html

Where is the Hand-Sanitzer?

What can we do at school or when shopping?

I think people are not going to out and about shopping except at the grocery store or drug store that sells other convenient basics. many events have been canceled or postponed. Some schools have extended Spring break and or are going to virtual classes instead of face to face in large classrooms to prevent any possible spread of COVID-19. This helps slow down the Flu bug, too. CDC calls this “delay phase”.

Be sure to wipe those cart handles.

Keep in mind the economy will be affected by all the closures. So, budget wisely.

For Every Action There Will be Consequences

…we as parennts want to give our kids the freedom to make their own choices. in increasing amounts.

…learning their choices will always have consequences, and that these consequences aren’t always good. … a lesson that we all have to learn one way or the other. …it better that our kids learn this under the protection of our umbrella when the consequences are smaller?!

Ideally, we as people would always receive consequences that are appropriate to our behavior, however, this is not always the case.

Sometimes we are mistreated, misinterpreted, taken advantage of, or wrongfully punished. …kids are learning valuable lessons. Even in these situations, our kids will be behaviorally responding…option of choosing good behavior or bad.

How to Protect Yourself From Coronavirus When Grocery Shopping

Here are precautions to take whether you shop in-store or online

By Tobie Stanger

“…older people/underlying health conditions—the group that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends stay home using a grocery delivery service…”

…whether you buy groceries online or in stores, there are some simple steps you can take to try to limit your exposure to the novel coronavirus

Wash nonporous containers. Simple rubbing with soap and water can kill the coronavirus because it tears apart its outer barrier.

  • …use dish soap on plastic, glass, and metal before putting them away. If that’s not practical, wash your hands well after putting away all packaging, including paper boxes and bags.
  • “It all comes down to hand hygiene,”
  • …wash your hands after opening the containers and using their contents.

“But if you use a pasta box a few days after you get it, there is little likelihood that the virus could still be live on the box and cause an infection,” says Eike Steinmann, a virologist at Ruhr-Universitat Bochum in Germany who has studied how long viruses live on different surfaces.

Please click HERE to read the full article.https://www.consumerreports.org/food-shopping/how-to-protect-yourself-from-coronavirus-when-grocery-shopping/?fbclid=IwAR2XM_ySu02-i4buu-sQqGdusMxmUDRbeWF_mKVQiUkruubN5qFC3sJUQSE

The suggested precautions in the above article are really something we should do every time we bring groceries into the house.

Have your ever thought about what bugs or rodents might be crawling and pooping and peeing on those cans of foods in the warehouse or backroom?

EWW!

Washing off your canned goods before storing them could help reduce bring bugs in the house.- just saying…it is past time we clean up our act anyway, don’t you think?

Are you grossed out, yet?

What if soap and water aren’t available?

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs.

  • If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol
  • …wash your hands with soap and water as soon as you can.

Baby Wipes?

  • Baby wipes may make your hands look clean
  • …but they’re not designed to remove germs from your hands.
  • CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water when possible.

https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/handwashing-family.html

This week I had a lot of errands for my disabled adult son.

One of those errands involved going to a major University Hospital to pick-up supplies. I have a respiratory diagnosis and am 69 years old. This makes me more at risk to get Influenza A ( which has been going around the community) COVID-19, or even a cold (which I rarely get a simple cold in decades.)

Health care facilities are breeding grounds for germs anyway.

Limiting visitors may seem cruel, but, folks it has to be done for good infection control- period. The staff will do the best they can- but, OMG! not everyone who walks in the door for treatment using good infection control practices. Now it the time to learn to do much better.

  • I took the visit in stride tho’ it was an ordeal going through screening and limited access.
  • I learned if you have to go out to a hospital or clinic to allow an extra 30 minutes IF you have no choice but to go. Visitors are being limited in medical facilities. Elective surgeries are being postponed to make sure there is enough beds in case of a sudden rush of critically ill patients.
  • I wore and changed non-latex medical gloves because I had to push the elevator buttons. Plus it reminded me to NOT touch my face.
  • I took a bottle of Gatorade to drink.
  • I stayed pleasant as I could even tho’ I had to take a long way around., asking for help when I needed it since I had to reroute through a new maze in the large facility.

Will we be changing the way we shop out of fear or convenience?

Personally, I gave up driving due to vision issues. This is not convenient at times. I have to order rides and wait instead of jumping into a car, getting there and getting back home quickly to carry sacks of food.

Fortunately, I live within walking distance to a grocery store and three pharmacies.

To save time, energy and stick to a budget I shop once a month and have my groceries delivered to my door.

  • I can also pay extra to have a store employee shop for me.

Why do I do this?

  • I can’t carry a month’s worth of food home on my walker -that simple. I shop HyVEE in Iowa paying $10 for someone to drive to our apartment and carry the load to my door.

I take some planning but boy do I save money.

  • For milk, I buy powdered milk.
  • I freeze bread.
  • I eat up fresh fruits and veggies right away then use canned or frozen fruits veggies and meat.

My HyVee keeps my groceries in the cooler just before they load the van to deliver – an important consideration when having groceries delivered.

If you do not do this already-start the habit now!

  • WASH off your cans, plastic and glass containers before putting them away.
  • Then WASH your hands well.

Get your children involved in making the grocery lists focusing on the most healthy foods.

  • Reduce junk -food-that will save your bundle!
  • Good choices in our diet will boost our immune systems and we will, in general, feel better when we make good choices with the food we eat.
  • Consider making homemade sweets instead of all packed and prepared. We love smoothies with fruit and healthy greens at our house.

Grocery stores are providing more disinfectant wipes for your carts.; closing self serve buffets/ salad bars; and no longer allow the use of refill cups. YAY!

The No Non-cents Nanna’s Blitz Cleaning Rules

I’m not so sure my children appreciated THe Blitz as much as I did, but…we sure got chores done quickly. I always had some kind of incentive goal. Hopefully, the link above will inspire your family to learn new and improved healthy habits.

  1. Predetermine a list of what areas of the home will be BLiTZED cleaned and sanitized.
  2. Have a BLITZ leader control a TIMER. for 10 or 15 minutes or call The Blitz during a commercial on TV.
  3. Let the kids be in control of who is the 1) leader 2) time-keeper 3) the inspector. Allow them to be creative in their roles. Remember age-appropriate tasks.
  4. Everyone will know ahead of time what tasks they can do in the area that is age-appropriate.
  5. The idea is to FOCUS on one task for a short period of time. it is amazing how much can be accomplished as TEAM with concentrated focus.
  6. Have a fun reward when the timer goes off. ( Cookie, pizza, a new card game, paint fingernails, play music and play FREEZE. (Again, allow the kids to be creative.)

Examples:

In the kitchen, dirty dishes can be divided up among 3 team members. ( I had 3 children. My daughters each had 3 children. So I think is teams of 3.)

  1. wash
  2. dry
  3. put away

OR

Have a discussion on where to touch the clean silverware. Consider playing a restaurant. How would the cook and waiters keep their diner safe to eat at?

I wish I had pictures of my kids decades ago playing an Italian restaurant for my Mother’s Day gift. They were hilarious.

How fast and good can you…? and still do it well?

  1. mop the floor?
  2. wipe and sanitize the counters?
  3. clean and sanitize all the knobs and fixtures?
  4. Wash canned goods before putting away (See below)

No Non-cents Nanna is not real hip on handheld tech devices. I encourage limiting the use of video games.

BTW: all your tech devices need sanitizer regularly anyway. follow the manufacturer’s directions on cleaning your phone, Ipdas and computer keyboards. EWW! Think of the germs!

Note: off-topic of COVID-19 and handwashing versus hand sanitizer.

If you and your children must use a tech device, please keep them germ-free as much as possible.

5 Reasons to Limit Your Child’s Exposure to Tech Gadgets

You can imagine how unpopular Pediatric occupational therapist, Cris Rowan, was when she made a plea for a ban of all handheld devices in children under 12.

…parents angered, but…many health reasons why we should limit how much time our children spend with handheld devices, and in front of the screen.

  1. Exercise is Needed for Better Brains
  2. Too Much Radiation
  3. Toddler’s Development at Risk
  4. Eye Strain Is More Common
  5. Poor Posture

Kudos to Back to The Joint Chiropractic – Katy #28013 for this insightful article.

10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12

  • Focusing here on SANITIZING the home IS something we as a family team CAN control.
  • Make it a fun family event that is necessary to do anyway.
  • Be Goal-Oriented with healthy rewards.

Kids really respond to the When -Then – Discipline.

Examples of non-tech reward goals that encourage learning infection control habits using When-Then-Discipline.

  1. WHEN you have finished brushing your teeth THEN we can read a bed-time story.
  2. WHEN the bathroom is sanitized THEN we can take a bubble bath.
  3. WHEN dishes are all put away THEN we can all make homemade pizzas together so we can dirty more dishes.
  4. WHEN your hands are washed THEN you can eat your snack.
  5. WHEN your hands are washed THEN you may play a video game for 15 minutes. Then be sure to wipe down the device as the manufacturer suggests.
  • Did you know that most handheld devices if cultured will have…brace yourself…POOP on it.
  • Regardless of this current COVID-19 pandemic, it is past time we all got our shit together and get into the habit of proper cleaning, don’t you think.

When you tell this to the kids- “There may be POOP on your Ipad. GROSS!” Then let’s see how fast they BLITZ clean those tech devices.

Be sure to use an EPA approved product. ( See link to 7 page pdf.)

The CDC notes that cleaning simply removes germs, while disinfecting actually kills them.

The right way to disinfect your home

…disinfecting wipes like the ones from Clorox—use enough so that whatever surface you’re cleaning stays wet for the recommended amount of time (3 to 5 minutes if your product doesn’t specify).

… set a timer to monitor your surface after you wipe to ensure that your efforts are actually killing germs instead of just spreading them around.

I encourage you to make your own good choices.

I personally like essential oil products from doTerra as I used to be a consultant writing blog posts on how I used their products. You might prefer another company. I am not paid to state this- it is my own personal choice. I try to avoid using synthetic scents leaning more toward the natural products since my family is hypersensitive to synthetics.

While I lean towards the more natural ( I swear by bleach tho’) I do so with caution on recommendations by a sales representative who has never had chemistry or micro-biology. Point blank, just because a person claims that their products kill germ and virus or cures disease I want documented studies that prove that.

Supporting Our Immune Systems

I shared this on my personal Facebook page:

I know I just po’d a lot of people who see my post stream.
BEWARE

COVID-19 is so news NO ONE has had time to test on patients to see what will work. if you decide to overdose on vitamins without licensed professionals monitoring you ANd you fail to tell the ER doc what all vitamins you are taking- don’t blame the doctor.for not being psychic to figure out why diarrhea has screwed up your electrolyte imbalance.

Quote: “Vitamins are a daily requirement essential for proper function. Before you take a supplement… be cautious

  • too much of certain vitamins and too little of others can create stomach problems like diarrhea. Overdoses of other water-soluble vitamins may not lead to diarrhea, but they can harm the body if continuously taken”
  • “Vitamins and Tylenol can interact with each other, notes Drugs.com 1.
  • do not mix medications or over-the-counter supplements without talking to your pharmacist or doctor.
  • Do not take any over-the-counter medications to help diarrhea unless your physician approves.
  • Let your doctor know of any medications, supplements or over-the-counter products that you’ve taken before you take other medications.
  • You can develop diarrhea for a number of reasons.

Sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose why the diarrhea started or has worsened…prolonged bouts of diarrhea, It’s possible to develop severe deficiencies.

You might think that you should take a vitamin or increase your current vitamin dosage, but vitamins can cause diarrhea themselves.

Plan Ahead But Do Not Panic

Stay calm and carry on with your life.

But, do take this time to sit down with your family to budget for your family’s priorities.

Get the whole family involved on how to tighten your belt within reason. It will be a good learning experience for everyone to get involved in making healthy choices for self-care versus focusing on this health scare.

I have absolutely no psychic powers to foretell the future. But, I do know that it is wise to close the barn door before the horses get out.

  • NO ONE person nor agency nor business will know all the answers.
  • Everyone will have to make the schedule and budget adjustments, without a doubt.
  • We all must work together as a team in the United States. If every individual in every family makes good choices by understanding real facts he less the government has to step in to force us. The US government already has its hands full.

USToday seems like a reliable source to take note of:

Shortages won’t be limited to basic necessities. Electronics, apparel and housewares, all of which are reliant on China, may also be affected, said Neil Saunders, managing director of Global Data, a retail consultancy.

If the outbreak is extensive and lasts into the second half of 2020, there could be shortages of apparel and back to school products. “We believe this could put the back to school season at risk for many U.S. based retailers,” Cowen analysts said in a report.

Conspiracy Theories and Scammers

How scammers could use coronavirus scare to steal your money

Susan Tompor

Detroit Free Press

The health of your wallet could be at risk as the new coronavirus spreads to new parts of the globe.

Consumers are warned that they could soon be inundated with fake products, phony stock deals, fabricated emails, texts and social media posts that are designed to steal money and personal information.

Fraudsters love to play into our fears.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services warned that scammers could be asking for donations for potential victims, providing advice on unproven treatments or providing phony information via social media.

The threat of the coronavirus is real, Nessel said in a statement, but there have been no confirmed cases in Michigan.

“You may lose significant amounts of money if you invest in a company that makes inaccurate or unreliable claims. You may not be able to sell your shares if trading in the company is suspended.”

One red flag is a small company, or what’s called a microcap stock, which is priced low…

“This can make it easier for fraudsters to spread false information about the company and to profit at the expense of unsuspecting investors,” the SEC stated.

Crooks can pump up that stock price by spreading false rumors…leaving innocent investors holding the bag.

Consumer watchdogs offer the following advice:

  • Don’t click on links, especially if an email appears out of the blue.
  • Be extra cautious when it comes to emails that claim to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Ignore online offers for vaccinations.
  • Don’t fall for “investment opportunities” relating to any hot news item, such as the coronavirus.

Jim Bakker, televangelist, gets cease-and-desist letter from …

www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2020/03/05/ny…

Mar 05, 2020 · The Rev. Jim Bakker, televangelist and salesman, has long promoted “Silver Solution” — a scientifically dubious medication made from the precious metal — to cure all sorts of ailments.

As they talked, an advertisement was plastered across the screen: Those seeking a cure for coronavirus or another illness could get four tubes of Silver Solution gel for $80 at JimBakkerShow.com. Or, for $125, they could buy a variety pack of two bottles of Silver Solution liquid, two tubes of gel and three lozenges.

That was false advertising, New York’s top prosecutor’s office claimed in a cease-and-desist letter to Bakker this week.

Faith is one thing…but putting congregations at risk is stupid IMO

In my humble opinion, pastors are not licensed to practice medicine and should not be making choices for their congregations in matters such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.

You don’t have to go to church to worship or pray.

I suggest families hold Sunday School at home.

Sing your favorite hymns or Sunday School songs. Check out worship music on YouTube if your church is not holding a virtual service. For those who put money in the offering plate to keep the church budget intact why not mail your tithe check?

In the meantime, make arrangements with your pastor to deep clean the church.

Fact or Fiction about Hand Sanitizers:

You think (hope?) that your hand-sanitizer habit is protecting you from colds and flu and gross bugaboos like E. coli. But even if it isn’t, it’s harmless. Right?
The rumor: Hand sanitizer is not only ineffective, it’s toxic…
Word on the street has it that despite how clean your hands feel after using a hand sanitizer, they’re actually still dirty — and using sanitizers might actually lower your resistance to disease. Is it true?!
The verdict: Soap and water beats sanitizers hands-down
Colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria,” Aiello points out.
Bottom line? Skip it.
Alcohol-based sanitizers, on the other hand, are fairly effective and safe. “Hand sanitizers that are 60% alcohol are good at killing bacterial pathogens,” says Bowen.
They can also kill some viruses, but not all of them — such as the noroviruses that can cause cruise-ship outbreaks.

Some people make their own hand sanitizer. But, is it effective for this or that bug? I have no idea.

FDA BANS 28 ACTIVE INGREDIENTS IN HAND SANITIZER

The government organization first announced its intention to analyze safety data on the antibacterial gel back in 2016. Now, less than three years later, the FDA is specifically calling out toxic actives with a history of health concerns, like triclosan and benzethonium chloride. Although 28 ingredients sounds like a substantial number, however, the change will effect less than 3 percent of the hand sanitizer marketplace. Most bottles of hand sanitizer you’ll find on the shelves at the drugstore use ethyl alcohol as the antiseptic.

5 Hidden Dangers of Hand Sanitizers

If you squirt hand sanitizer thinking it’s a safe way to clean your hands, think again. Here are 5 hidden dangers you may not know about.

Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotics are effective against bacteria. But what happens if your body builds up resistance to antibiotics, and in turn promotes resistance to bacteria?

Triclosan contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics. …hand sanitizers may lower your resistance to diseases by killing good bacteria, which helps protect against bad bacteria.

In a 2011 study by the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers found that health care employees who were most likely to use hand sanitizers over soap and water for routine hand washing were nearly six times more at risk for outbreaks of norovirus, which causes most cases of acute gastroenteritis.

 Alcohol Poisoning

Just because it doesn’t have triclosan, doesn’t mean it’s completely safe.

The active ingredient in some hand sanitizers is usually a type of alcohol that acts as an antimicrobial that kills bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control recommend ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or a mix of both in a concentration of 60% to 95%.

ABC News reported. A few squirts of hand sanitizer could equal a couple of shots of hard liquor.

Is it fact or fiction?

I personally have concerns over the overuse of hand sanitizers in place of friction with soap under running water, therefore I think this is valid post to consider when you need to practice good hand hygiene.

The facts on coronavirus aren’t all scary. So why so much fear?

Alia E. Dastagir, USA TODAY

USA TODAY

As the number of confirmed cases of illness grows, so too does the nation’s collective uncertainty. Psychologists and public health experts say public anxiety is high, and it’s largely fueled by a feeling of powerlessness.

“When we feel, ‘Oh my God, there’s a new boogeyman out there,’ it comes with extra fear,” said David Ropeik, an expert on risk communication. “When we don’t understand something that leaves us feeling like we don’t know everything we need to know to protect ourselves … that equates to powerlessness, vulnerability.”

Coronavirus, explained: Everything to know, from symptoms to how to prepare

“The idea that we can hopefully reduce transmissions through really good hand-washing feels insufficient. It’s not anything new. And how will you know if you’ve done it well enough?”

It’s why many people are rushing out to buy toilet paper, face masks, disinfectant and hand sanitizer. It makes them feel they are at least doing something, she said.

Managing the outbreak: A self-quarantine seems brutal when you’re not sick – but it really is for the greater good

“We understand the flu, we have personal experience with it. That makes it less scary,” Bufka said. “We know what to expect with something like that. As humans we can read information, hear information from others and take all that in, but personal experience makes a difference.”

Limit your exposure to the hyped-up news. It can be misleading.

The role of the media

Health experts say the media has an important role to play.

It must dispense accurate information without being sensational, and it must avoid exploiting people’s fears.

A blog post from the Poynter Institute, which trains journalists, noted that saying “deadly virus” can be misleading, because the virus is not deadly for most people.

What does the coronavirus do to your body? Everything to know about the infection process

Javier Zarracina and Adrianna Rodriguez, USA TODAY

USA TODAY

As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the U.S. – canceling major eventsclosing schoolsupending the stock market and disrupting travel and normal life – Americans are taking precautions against the new coronavirus that causes the disease sickening and killing thousands worldwide.

The World Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise the public be watchful for fever, dry cough and shortness of breath, symptoms that follow contraction of the new coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2.

According to the CDC, the virus can spread person-to-person within 6 feet through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. (In 2021 the CDC has updated this.)

…possible for the virus to remain on a surface or object, be transferred by touch and enter the body through the mouth, nose or eyes.

  • Those most at risk to severe developments are older than 70 and have weak immune responses. (This was true in the early weeks/ months. Keep in mind that there were reasons for this we figured out later. And YES, anyone can catch this virus and get very ill while others show few symptoms.)
  • Others at risk include people with pulmonary abnormalities, chronic disease or compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients who have gone through chemotherapy treatment.

Viscidi urges to public to think of the coronavirus like the flu because it goes through the same process within the body. Many people contract the flu and recover with no complications.

“People should remember that they’re as healthy as they feel,” he said. “And shouldn’t go around feeling as unhealthy as they fear.”
